Job Summary

The UMass BHI PART resilience and wellbeing instructor works to instruct Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine (BHI) programs, such as, Positivity and Relaxation Training (PART). An expansion of this work includes alumni efforts, process improvement, pilot projects and a conscientious effort towards continuous improvement.


Essential Functions

  • Achieve and maintain certification as a BHI Positivity and Relaxation Training Instructor.
  • Implement a minimum of five sections of PART. Each section has up to fifteen students over the fall and spring academic semesters respectively.
  • Oversee student employees within the program.
  • Instruct topical adaptations of BHI material for course alumni.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the institute’s work in all settings. Share a deep understanding of the mission, vision and focus of the program.
  • Symbolize and embody the work of the program as a role model for students.

Other Functions

  • Collect and manage data about BHI programs.
  • Provide a broad range of administrative support for program functions as required.
  • Perform special projects and other duties as assigned by supervisor showing adaptability and flexibility to accomplish goals.
  • Serve in a back-up role for other co-workers in their absence, as it relates to course instruction.
  • Performs related duties as assigned or required to meet Department, Executive Area/Division, and University goals and objectives.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to Title IX, Clery and other compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrates capacity, skill and willingness to engage students and contribute to student success.
  • Works collaboratively with other campus stakeholders to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and Campus Life.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.
  • Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
  • Understands and contributes to implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a respectful, inclusive environment that is supportive of diversity.
  • Uses access to sensitive and/or not yet public university related information only in the performance of the responsibilities of position and exercises care to prevent unnecessary disclosure to others.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Bachelor's degree and one (1) year demonstrated teaching and/or mentoring experience.
  • Ability to learn, understand and operate within multiple systems to effectively administer programs and responsibilities.
  • Excellent ability to work both independently and to be part of an effective team, with a highly cooperative and collaborative work style. Ability to adapt and work effectively as the situation changes.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively, and create and maintain harmonious relationships with a diverse population of staff, faculty, students, and off-campus constituents.
  • Flexibility to work with initiative and willingness to take on a variety of tasks related to the successful operation and administration of the program. Ability to work effectively under pressure, in varying situations with independence, competent judgment, and discretion. Extensive organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, balancing the demands of concurrent and potentially competing projects.
  • Excellent ability to collect data from multiple sources and create new reports that add value to program goals. Excellent computer usage skills including email, spreadsheets (including formulas), word processing, and databases.
  • Ability to stay on task and work productively with minimum supervision. Ability to write concisely, express thoughts clearly and develop ideas in a logical sequence.
  • Ability to investigate a situation, seek out additional information and refer students to additional resources as necessary.
  • Ability to read, understand, apply and explain rules, regulations and policies/procedures related to duties. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and create effective and efficient work processes. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Master’s degree in education, human service, wellbeing, health, nutrition or related field.
  • Collegiate teaching experience.
  • Certified Yoga, Tai Chi or QiGong instructor.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

  • Typical office environment activity.
  • Occasional outdoor applications of the work may apply.

Additional Details

  • The UMass and Benson-Henry Institute (BHI) for Mind Body Medicine, Center of Excellence in Resilience and Wellbeing is a one-year, gift funded, pilot program.
  • Continuation of the program is contingent upon evaluation of outcomes, and availability of funds.

Work Schedule

  • Monday – Friday; 8:30 am-5:00 pm; flexible to accomplish program goals.
  • May be required to work occasional nights or weekends.
