About the Position
The Public Works Department has openings for approximately 6 temporary Maintenance Worker I positions. Applications received under this recruitment will be considered for positions in the Vegetation and Habitat Operations Work Unit. These temporary positions will last no more than 9 months.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Two years work experience for vegetation and habitat operations positions.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively as a part of a team.
- Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.
- Ability to follow basic directions, as well as the ability to work independently and to quickly learn new tasks.
- Ability to represent the City of Olympia in a professional manner at all times.
- Punctual, regular, reliable attendance required.
- The ability to consistently work in a safe and efficient manner.
- The ability to perform physical work outdoors on uneven ground in various weather conditions.
- The ability and willingness to work collaboratively with a team to provide excellent customer service to all community members. A positive "can do" attitude; takes the initiative to get the work done.
- Adaptable to changing work environments.
- Flagger Certification and experience setting up traffic control is preferred.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
Vegetation & Habitat Operations
Two years of vegetation maintenance work experience, including experience with:
- Mowing, trimming, edging and other aspects of landscape and vegetation management.
- Pruning, planting and removing small diameter trees and shrubs.
- Operating various types of small power equipment used for vegetation maintenance.
- Landscape maintenance such as weeding, pruning and clearing areas for planting.
- Site restoration, including invasive weed removal, site preparation, soil amendment and restoration planting.
- Ability to identify invasive and noxious plants and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) best management practices for management and control of noxious and invasive weeds.
- General operation and maintenance of light duty vehicles and trailers.
Minimum qualifications & Requirements
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- One year general work experience required. Experience in specialty area (i.e. repair, maintenance, vegetation control, etc.) preferred.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work outdoors in heavily trafficked areas, in all types of weather, and on all types of surfaces.
- Skill in using of a wide variety of power and hand tools, equipment and machinery used in vegetation management.
- Use good judgment in the operation of potentially dangerous equipment and while working at potentially hazardous work sites. Maintain constant awareness of hazards and continuously apply safe work habits and practices.
- Listen to, remember, and apply work directions, instructions, information, and practices in daily communication with supervisors and co-workers.
- Safely drive and operate heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment such as pickup trucks, off-road service and transport vehicles, and other related conveyances.
- Demonstrated punctual, regular and reliable attendance is required.
- Follow appropriate safety procedures.
Special Requirement
- Washington State Flagger's Certification is preferred.
- The Vegetation and Habitat positions will* r*equire a Washington State Department of Agriculture, Pesticide Applicator’s License (Private Commercial or Public Operator and Right of Way endorsement.)

Contacts
- Maintenance Workers have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.
- City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.
- It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.
- If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.
Supervision
- None.

- The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.
Working Conditions(Working conditions will vary by assignment.)
- Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
- Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
- This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
