Duties and Responsibilities
The Wellness Center provides medical, health education, and counseling services using a multidisciplinary team approach to assist university students in the process of becoming aware of, taking responsibility for, and making choices that directly contribute to one’s well-being and that of the common good. The services offered by the Wellness Center focus on the student as well as the student’s role in the community. The Violence Prevention and Advocacy Specialist will directly oversee violence prevention education and will serve as the primary coordinator and contact for gender-based advocacy services. Education topics include sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, consent, bystander intervention, rape culture, and supporting survivors. Applications are encouraged from all individuals who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice.
- Assesses campus-wide needs for health education specific to sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking response and prevention, and sexual health by collecting and analyzing relevant data.
- Plans, markets, and conducts effective health education interventions to assist students in making healthy decisions regarding sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking prevention; sexual health; stress management; healthy relationships; mental health and other health topics as needed.
- Chairs the Coordinated Community Coalition on Gender-based Violence to help the University shape a comprehensive response to sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. Recruits and maintains a working relationship with community organizations, volunteers, faculty, and classes for support and assistance in program planning.
- Serves as coordinator for the sexual assault advocacy program, including the management of student sexual assault advocate volunteers for the University. Rotates the staffing of hotline during business hours. Serves as back-up to student volunteers over weekends during the academic year.
- Provides advocacy, non-clinical crisis support, information, and referrals to students affected by gender-based violence, and to others in the Loyola community. Organizes relevant in-service training programs for volunteers and/or personnel.
- Co-advises a student group whose mission is to create inclusive and critical spaces to challenge norms, further prevention, and empower survivors of gender-based violence.
- Trains students employed by the University, staff, and faculty on campus resources and services around gender-based violence, and how to best respond to students who have experienced or have been affected by these issues as requested or needed. Provides consultation to staff and faculty as needed.
- Formulates appropriate and measurable objectives, designs and implements programs consistent with objectives, modifying as necessary to ensure effectiveness.
- Develops and conducts a comprehensive evaluation to ensure effectiveness. Interprets results to modify and redesign future program plans.
- Selects, develops, and maintains educational resources on assigned program topics for dissemination, electronically and/or printed. Maintains related website and social network pages.
- Creates dynamic and relevant content for social media outlets and websites.
- Assists with University health promotion initiatives including but not limited to motivational interviewing, Orientation seminars, and Active Bystander Training.
- Incorporates multicultural diversity and social justice concepts and principles into prevention and advocacy services.
- Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Master’s degree in related field and 3 to 5 years of work experience in the development, planning, or coordination of health and wellness related activities, preferably in a college health setting. Sexual Assault and/or Domestic Violence Advocate certifications preferred. Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES) is a plus.
Qualifications
Demonstrated understanding of best practices in violence prevention and responding to survivors of violence using a trauma-informed approach. Excellent communication, presentation, networking, teamwork, and leadership skills. Strong writing skills and public speaking skills. Ability to work beyond traditional business hours with some nights and weekends required. Ability to prepare and conduct outreach and trainings on a variety of health topics, including mental health preferred.
Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
Master’s degree in related field and 3 to 5 years of work experience in the development, planning, or coordination of health and wellness related activities, preferably in a college health setting. Sexual Assault and/or Domestic Violence Advocate certifications preferred. Certification as a Health Education Specialist (CHES) is a plus.
