Department of Medicine: Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for Part Time Web Computing Specialist.

Position Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to provide broad programming services for the University of Washington Infectious Diseases Education and Assessment (IDEA) program. This position will collaborate with IDEA staff and external partners to improve practices, processes, and tools for development, testing and versioning, continuous integration, automated release and deployment of service changes, and operations and monitoring. This position will contribute ideas and data to inform strategy, to promote learning, and to enact the overarching vision and mission of the IDEA program.

We are seeking a seasoned professional who in the short term can provide support for an existing content management and learning management system. In the long term, this position will help evolve our platform to its next generation.

IDEA has successfully developed and launched four national online infectious disease training curricula – the National HIV Curriculum [www.hiv.uw.edu], the National STD Curriculum [www.std.uw.edu], Hepatitis B Online [www.hepatitisb.uw.edu], and Hepatitis C Online [www.hepatitisc.uw.edu]. To date, these IDEA curricula have more than 128,000 registered learners. IDEA is a nationally recognized technology leader in delivering online educational content.

Position Complexities:
This position requires a high level of technical expertise, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Impact:
The UW is strongly committed to developing partnerships in infectious disease training in the areas of HIV, hepatitis and sexually transmitted diseases, and other infectious diseases both domestically and internationally. The IDEA program is housed in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, headed by Anna Wald, MD, MPH. Specifically, this position will be supporting online health information and education training platforms that will increase the visibility of the UW's commitment to HIV, STDs, and viral hepatitis care and treatment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Application Development (75%)
  • Design and develop websites and web applications that meet the needs of our department.

  • Develop new features.

  • Revise user interface and website features based on user feedback.

  • Verify that our websites comply with current operational procedures and UW policies, including security, privacy and accessibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and work with an established code base.

  • Provide routine website upgrades and maintenance.

  • Maintain thorough documentation of all programs and procedures.

  • Write automated tests for current and new features.

  • Contribute to web strategy discussions, offer solutions, and perform other tasks related to our dynamic and collaborative approach to web development.

  • Monitor and respond to alerts of service outages with a goal of minimizing downtime and ensuring system stability.


  • User Support (10%)
  • Guide team members on content generation and information architecture.

  • Respond to support requests from internal team members and external users and provide appropriate and timely solutions.

  • Provide training to content contributors on using our CMS framework and following best practices for authoring web content.


  • Operations – DevOps (10%)
  • Integrate tests into a deployment platform.

  • Maintain code with a code versioning platform.


  • Cloud and Network Engineering (5%)
  • Monitor and respond to alerts of service outages with a goal of minimizing downtime and ensuring system stability.


  • MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and at least 4 years of experience

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge of web fundamentals (HTML, CSS and JavaScript).

  • Experience with custom and off-the-shelf CMS’s.

  • Experience using Git.

  • Experience developing with and for RESTful API’s.

  • Experience with React, Node and related technologies.

  • Demonstrated expertise or education in user interface design, interaction design, and/or information design.

  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to respond appropriately to deadline pressures.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including team and relationship building.


  • DESIRED:

  • 2-5 years of LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) development experience.

  • Subject matter expertise in building Web-based, cloud hosted Learning Management applications

  • Experience utilizing the AWS infrastructure

  • Experience with Docker setup and deployment

  • Experience with GraphQL

  • Demonstrated expertise or education in organizing and writing content for the web, and ability to coach content editors.

  • Experience with graphic design for the web, including familiarity with graphics software such as Photoshop and Illustrator.

  • Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations


  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • At times, this position may be required to work evenings and on weekends to ensure that the active software applications are available to users.

  • This position will primarily be able to work remotely, although there may be some activities that need to be conducted at the UW Ninth and Jefferson Building (NJB).


  • Other Comments:

    This position requires an individual who possesses excellent judgment and works well under stress and while juggling competing priorities. This individual needs to be extremely focused, well-organized, and flexible with regard to work hours and the ability to accommodate the workload to meet deadlines. This position requires demonstrated superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex, technical information in an easy-to-understand way. The individual must be self-motivated with an ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
