This position ranges from 15-30 hours per week, with the possibility of full-time hours. Additionally, the Career Education Center can offer flexibility in how class schedules are created to meet the needs of the welding teacher.

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the principal, plan and teach welding classes. The class will follow the California State CTE standards and provide students with relevant academic and technical instruction within the Manufacturing and Product Development industry sector. The teacher serves as the American Welding Society (AWS) Test Supervisor for the Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) using applicable codes and standards to conduct welder qualification testing. The teacher will be responsible for the administration of weld testing, examination and certification, documentation, and record keeping as required for status of AWS ATF.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Instruct students on skills necessary to enter specific entry-level positions in welding; develop a course outline and review and select instructional materials and develop lesson plans; provide lectures and demonstrations; review and update the curriculum relevant to current industry standards and in alignment with AWS standards and/or publications;
Teach the workforce to read blueprints, layout material, understand quality assurance;
Provide detailed and technically accurate written condition and open inspection reports;
Drive to various locations to participate in the design, implementation and evaluation of lab, work experience and internship programs; develop internship sites and contracts; make regular visits to sites where students are present;
Assess student progress; correct papers and assign grades; evaluate student skills and competencies through testing and observation; advise parents and students of student progress;
Develop and maintain positive contacts with employers to assist in job placement opportunities for qualified students;
Provide for set up of labs and shop areas for demonstrations and on-going work;
Provide for emphasis on safety and teach constant awareness of safe work habits; establish guidelines for proper student conduct and implement disciplinary procedures and policies that ensure a safe and orderly environment;
Prepare a variety of reports and records; take daily attendance and provide grade reports; maintain related records;
Confer with industry representatives, program administrators, and others regarding needs and operations; work directly with Advisory Committees as assigned;
Schedule and participate in field trips; arrange for special speakers as appropriate;
Maintain and care for assigned equipment; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies;
Enforce impeccable housekeeping in classroom and all lab areas;
Participate in in-service training, workshops, and training programs available to maintain technical and professional competency in the field of welding;
Design and implement appropriate behavior management techniques for use in instructional and disciplinary practices;
Is a current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and conducts welder qualification tests in accordance with the ATF Quality Assurance Manual;
Verify equipment calibration and check base material and consumables prior to welder testing;
Establish and maintain the testing schedule, including testing of students;
Communicate and coordinate with the Technical Facility Representative for facility availability, usage, and equipment maintenance;
Perform and/or coordinate standard, contract-based, and student weld testing for the Career Education Center in accordance with the ATF Quality Assurance Manual and applicable regulations;
Perform visual inspections and bend tests for all weld tests in accordance with Quality Assurance Manual and applicable codes or standards;
Document tests and report results to candidates, American Welding Society, following the guidelines outlined in the Quality Assurance Manual;
Build and maintain relationships with external entities who have a need for welding test services;
Schedule and perform off-site testing with the Technical Facility Representative;
Receive and address technical complaints related to the ATF as outlined in the Quality Assurance Manual;
Utilize best practices outlined in the Quality Assurance Manual for welder testing to ensure accuracy, repeatability and code compliance;
Utilize the ATF Certified Welder portal for submitting certified welder application(s) to AWS Certification Department outlined in the Quality Assurance Manual;
Adhere to VCOE, state, federal, and AWS ATF administrative procedures, guidelines, initiatives, and directives to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

ABILITY TO:
Teach the full range of classes from basics to certification including but not limited to: oxy-fuel cutting, air carbon arc cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), fabrication and layout, blueprint reading (including welding symbols);
Demonstrate computer skills to assure implementation of appropriate programs associated with teaching, learning, curriculum development, reporting, and record keeping;
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
Provide instruction within the assigned subject area;
Establish and maintain effective relationships;
Operate and demonstrate the use of laboratory materials and equipment;
Monitor and evaluate student progress;
Train and provide work direction to others;
Maintain records and prepare reports;
Compile and verify data and prepare reports;
Maintain current knowledge of program rules, regulations, requirements and restrictions;
Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action;
Work independently with little direction;
Meet schedules and timelines.
EDUCATION:
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and possess a Designated Subjects Credential in Manufacturing and Product Development. If an applicant does not possess the credential, he/she must have at least three years of work experience directly related to the subject to be named on the credential, to include:
· One year of the required experience shall be within the last five years of the issuance of the credential; OR
· Two years of the required experience shall be within the last ten years of the issuance of the credential.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
· Valid California driver license; AND
· Qualification for teacher certification, Designated Subjects Credential in Manufacturing and Product Development; OR Single Subject Industrial and Technology Education; AND
· American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification; AND
· AWS WPQ1 Procedure and Performance Qualification Endorsement certification; this will be required within six months of the implementation of the new AWS QC47 requirement; AND
· Obtain an AWS Certified Welder Educator (CWE) certificate prior to renewal of contract.
Preferred:
Current welding certifications;
Working knowledge of non-destructive testing;
Working knowledge of common welding processes, weld inspection and testing, and metallurgy;
Working knowledge of basic fabrication, layout, and blueprint reading.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
ENVIRONMENT:
Career Education Center classroom, laboratory/shop environment; subject to driving a vehicle to conduct work. Assignments may include day, weekend, and/or evening classes on campus and/or off campus locations.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
Requires vision (which may be corrected) to read small print;
Requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend;
Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time;
Perform work which involves the frequent lifting, pushing and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds;
May be required to work with harsh and toxic substances;
May be required to wear protective apparel including goggles, face protectors, aprons, shoes and oxygen breathing apparatus;
May be required to work around loud noise, reach overhead and above shoulders, and demonstrate skills in classroom, laboratory or shop settings;
Requires hearing and speaking to exchange information and to present, teach, and lecture;
Requires dexterity of hands and fingers to operate laboratory equipment and kneeling or crouching.
