Brief Summary of Job Duties
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science or related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Environmental Science or related field
- 1-3 years Experience working with endangered species and knowledge of endangered species regulations
Special Conditions of Employment
- Maintain a valid CA driver’s license, a clean DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program
- Satisfactory conviction history background check

Research and Data Analysis
Under the direction of the Reserve Director, monitors populations of Western Snowy Plovers and CA Least Terns. Survey for nest location and fate, chick fate, cause of nest and chick failure, at least 3 times per week. Survey population counts and bands once a week. Implements monitoring according to approved USFWS protocols. Manages monitoring databases and analyze data from monitoring and beach use data using scientific statistical methods. In consultation with Reserve Director, evaluate data to determine effectiveness of the COPR conservation efforts particularly for the Western Snowy Plover. Creates maps of plover nests and assists with the report writing. Analyze historical data when needed to understand trends and causes of plover nesting success and failures.

Predator Control Surveillance
Check traps and predator activity on the Snowy Plover area daily. Report and record predator data. Coordinates predator control activities with USDA. Seek information and novel approaches to protect Snowy Plovers from predators.

Conservation Management Support
Works with the Santa Barbara Zoo to raise abandoned Western Snowy Plover eggs and rehabilitate plover chicks, when approved by the Reserve Director. Maintains the fences on the Reserve's beach that restrict access to the protected snowy plover and least tern habitat and move the fences as needed as the beach morphology changes during the year. Maintains informational signage along the beach fence. Coordinates with the Plover coordinator and other staff to procure supplies and equipment for the Reserve's conservation programs. Attend a weekly staff meeting to report and plan week activities.
