Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to work with Public Health and serve as the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Dietician and Nutritionist Supervisor. This position will provide direct supervision to WIC staff and oversee clinical operations in Socorro and other health offices as needed. Duties may include but not limited to developing objectives and organizational plans for the effective delivery of services. Supervisor will oversee the interview and hire process, assist in employee training, conduct performance evaluations and disciplinary actions, and oversee daily WIC clinic operations, provide nutrition education, conduct group facilitated nutrition education and information on healthy eating and breastfeeding support. Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of certified list.

  • Management and workforce development by encouraging and fostering an environment of trust, respect and professionalism and manage perception of fairness.
  • Manage and foster development of staff to assure accountability of quality clinical services in local health offices.
  • Mentor staff to become motivated and productive and embrace public health and regional values as they carry out job expectations.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and conduct training and ongoing coaching of WIC staff to provide excellent client service delivery.

Who are the customers?

Pregnant, Breastfeeding and Post-partum women, infants and children - up to the age of five (5) years who qualify to participate on the WIC Program.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate has experience:
  • Fluent in both English and Spanish.
  • Entering and retrieving data from multiple information systems including the New Mexico Women, Infants & Children Program Automated Data System.
  • Recruiting, hiring and coaching staff.
  • Working with low income families.
  • Collaborating and coordinating with other organizations within the community.
  • Ensuring adherence to WIC policies, protocols and procedures.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in a social, community, health, education or nutritional field. Three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Successful completion of Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act (HIPPA) and successful completion of Clinical Laboratory Improvements Act (CLIA) courses are required within sixty (60) days of employment.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting up to 50 pounds may be required. Services are provided in a clinic with diverse population, many who do not speak the English language. Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Travel to satellite offices, meetings, training sessions, and special events with the occasional overnight stay is required.
