YMCA of Greater Seattle Education Readiness
Job description
The mission of the YMCA of Greater Seattle is to build a community where all people, especially the young, are encouraged to develop their fullest potential in spirit, mind and body. The Y is an inclusive organization of men, women and children with a shared commitment to nurture the potential of youth, promote healthy living and foster social responsibility. Through 13 branches, two overnight camps and 200+ program sites, the Y works side-by-side with neighbors throughout King and south Snohomish counties to help kids and families thrive—and to apply their positive behaviors and goals at home, school, the workplace and beyond. Each year, the Y reaches more than 90,000 youth in King County. We focus on healthy, living, youth development, and social responsibility.
WA State set a goal of 90% kindergarten readiness statewide by 2020. Unfortunately, the most recent numbers (2019-2020) available show the state average is at just 51.5%. The numbers vary by district, but the highest need is reflected in South King County school districts where numbers are at 46.8% to 51.5% of districts’ children achieving kindergarten readiness.
Our Kindergarten Readiness programs address the critical need for youth to be kindergarten ready, equip caregivers to support their family, and support families with school navigation. AmeriCorps members would support the Kindergarten Readiness Program, a program aligned with WA Kids Standards, curriculum, and support caregiver education workshop events that minimizes barriers to participation and engages diverse populations. Interviews for these positions will occur in August and will consist of a phone screening and a panel interview.
AmeriCorps members will support the Kindergarten Readiness programming to 10-20 participants and families in school readiness program and workshops at program locations. This will be done through individual skill building supports to increase skills for youth that need additional time and attention to achieve kinder readiness levels by end of program. Through providing feedback and collaborating with Y staff to modify and implement responsive curriculum that supports the community being served. Supporting the facilitation of caregiver workshops that aligns with curriculum through leading youth activities while caregivers are learning. Supporting community building by collaborating with community partners to connect resources for families that support whole child health. And finally, supporting the creation of internal data tracking tools based on WA Kids Assessment.
