Somerville Youth Soccer seeks a part-time Academy Instructor to assist in training and evaluations of players participating in our travel program.

The primary responsibilities are to conduct training sessions with each of our travel teams (Grade 3 through Grade 8) on a rotating basis, supplementing the instruction teams receive from their dedicated coaching staffs; and to conduct end-of-season player evaluations using our multi-variable template.

The successful candidate will work with the SYS Director of Soccer and other staff during the fall and spring competitive seasons (18 total weeks during the calendar year). This includes working with U-10, U-12 and U-14 teams during weekly training sessions and attending competitive matches on Saturdays to conduct player assessments that are incorporated into our evaluation and rostering process.

Candidates should have a player-centered coaching philosophy, an excellent knowledge of the sport, preferably as a player and/or coach, and a flexible evening and Saturday schedule to perform duties within a 15-hour work week.

The fall season runs from early September through early November, and the spring season runs from early April through mid-June. Player evaluations and attendance at competitive matches is most relevant during the spring season.

ABOUT SOMERVILLE YOUTH SOCCER

The Somerville Youth Soccer Association is a volunteer organization founded in the Fall of 1990 by a small group of parents working with the Somerville Recreation Commission. At the time, Somerville had no organized program for youth soccer. Many Somerville children were registered to play in Medford, Cambridge, and Arlington. By the Fall of 1991 a formal Board of Directors with officers was established. The Association’s by-laws and constitution were adopted in January of 1992 and revised in June 2022.

As the largest youth sports organization in the city of Somerville, SYS provides the chance for youth ages two-to-eighteen to participate in playing opportunities in three different programs: Tykes (ages 2-3), In-Town (Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st& 2ndGrade) and Travel (grades 3-11). In the spring of 2022, SYS had a record 1,203 players. Last year, one in every four Somerville Public Schools students was a member of SYS.
