MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

1. Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field of study.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Participate in daily operations of the Pathology in the morgue and gross room.

2. Handle all tissue/ autopsy materials/specimens appropriately with preservation as needed, chain of custody as needed, disposal of organs, tissues and fluids, disposition of bodies, etc., and all legalities with associated paperwork.

3. Interact with Funeral Homes, County Medical Examiners, possibly State Medical Examiners, body transport services, CORE, Human Gift Registry in Anatomy Dept, etc., to properly direct activities surrounding movement and disposition of the deceased with accompanying correct disposition of personal belongings and legal needs.

4. Assure all paperwork associated with body movement/disposition is properly completed, including death certificates, autopsy requests, personal belonging forms, COVID-19 testing papers, etc.

5. Provide follow up as needed by contacting hospital staff, radiology, law enforcement, medical examiners, physicians involved with case, etc.

6. Oversee paperwork and assists with direction of finances involved with private autopsies and with autopsies from system hospitals. Interact with families requesting private autopsies to provide details/ information. Communicate with system hospitals to arrange for times, recommend transport, etc.

7. Operate equipment and performs appropriate QA and maintenance, documenting all. Report anything unacceptable to the Specialist or Technical Specialist or Manager and documents all resolutions.

8. Facilitate and/or expedite assessment of Employee Health related issues, providing necessary interventions or making appropriate referrals as applicable.

9. Assist in pick-up and delivery of specimens from various locations as needed.

10. Assist in specialized protocols to optimize medical information (e.g., Gross Room Frozen Sections for immediate OR diagnoses, H&E Stains, etc.). Preserve specimens for teaching and research (i.e., organs, sections of organs), according to SOP.

11. Receive, identify, process, accession, specimens from outside laboratories according to regulations. Process, prepare, and send specimens to outside laboratories or department if necessary, accurately completing all associated paperwork.

12. In morgue and Gross Room, successfully participate in hazardous chemical and fume monitoring according to federal and state regulations.

13. Maintain accurate and legible morgue and gross documentation and communication logs and QA and QC requirements.

14. Maintain confidentiality and adheres to all HIPPA requirements.

15. Participate in daily operations of the Pathology in the morgue and gross room.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Capable of moving as required deceased patients, equipment, and supplies utilizing standard mortuary equipment and/or other employees that assist in lift process. Maximum expected lifting responsibilities would be at approximately 50 pounds. Heavier weight movement would require mechanical assistance or help from other employees.

2. Capable of engaging in continuous active work requiring moderate physical exertion and manual dexterity.

3. Capable of rapid movement and standing for long periods of time.

4. Capable of using an air-purifying respirator required by OSHA.

Additional Job Description:

As a Anatomic Pathology Technician, the successful applicant will be primarily working in a laboratory setting under the supervision of the Pathologist Assistant(s) and in coordination with other Gross Room Lab Technicians. They will be required to assist the staff in accessioning laboratory specimens and retrieve collected specimens from different locations within the hospital and attached buildings. In addition, the laboratory technician will be expected to assist with the preparation of frozen section slides and other needs of the Pathologist Assistant(s) as they arise throughout their shift. They will be required to perform afternoon duties such as transporting grossed cassettes to Histology and loading the tissue processors, preparing fresh H&E stain solutions, re-stocking supplies, cleaning workstations, and other duties as assigned. The successful candidate must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department. The laboratory technician must have a general knowledge of medical terminology and a background or familiarity with forensic science, biology, and/or chemistry is preferred. In addition, the successful application would be responsible with retrieving the batch (cassettes) from the “Gross Room” which is located right outside the OR’s in the main hospital. They must follow and adhere to standard operating procedures and policies within the department.
