The Aurora Police Department Armorer/Gunsmith performs yearly inspections, maintenance, and needed repairs of firearms, less lethal shotguns and less lethal launchers carried by department members. The Armorer/Gunsmith ensures that department members have functional weapons and is a knowledgeable resource to provide guidance as to what firearms/equipment are authorized. The Armorer/Gunsmith ensures that firearms are in compliance with the authorized weapons list, department specifications, and manufacturers specifications.

The Aurora Police Department is responsible for providing law enforcement services to a growing, urban/suburban community with unique and ever-changing needs. Despite the changes in Colorado law, the City of Aurora maintains a drug free workplace. A positive test of marijuana is grounds for disqualification and ineligibility for employment with the city for one year or termination once hired.
To be employed by the Aurora Police Department you will need to successfully pass a background check, polygraph test, and fingerprint screening, along with other conditions of employment; drug test and verification of employment. - Perform inspections, routine services, cleanings, repairs (to the extent possible), and testing of firearms.
- Install equipment on firearms such as slings, grips, sights, and optics, etc.
- Ensure department owned firearms and department members’ firearms are in compliance with the authorized weapons list, department specifications, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards/specifications.
- Perform inspections, routine services, cleanings, repairs (to the extent possible), and testing of less lethal shotguns and less lethal launchers.
- Document/maintain a list of all inspections/repairs completed on weapons and inform the supervisor of all failed inspections.
- Follow established procedures for weapon and ammunition security/accountability/inventory.
- Conduct inventory of all parts/equipment needed for repairs and inform the supervisor of all parts/equipment that needs to be purchased.
- Conduct pro-active research into firearms related issues.
- Disseminate necessary updates/information to members of the Firearms Training Unit.
- Provide members of the Firearms Training Unit with research, recommendations, and technical information about weapons, ammunition, targets, range supplies, optics, suppressors, and other related items.
- Make recommendations to their supervisor about modifications to department directives/authorized weapons list.
- Provide recommendations to department members regarding firearms/equipment based on department policy/authorized weapons list.
- Be knowledgeable of the site safety plan for the range and have the ability to perform the duties.
- Follow all applicable safety rules/procedures, including the use of personal safety equipment, and ensure all visitors adhere to safety rules/procedures.
- Prepare and post proper signage regarding safety.
- Operate all range facilities and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Maintain facility and equipment.
- Assist with firearms qualification sessions for department members.
- Develop written documents and provide training related to firearms nomenclature and maintenance.
- Coordinate with city employees and vendors, which may include tasks such as coordinating range maintenance and coordinating the return of items in need of factory repair.
- Attend necessary training to maintain certifications.
- Promptly prepare written reports, updates, and other material as needed or requested.
- Provide support as directed or when needed to ensure overall unit efficiency.
- Perform additional duties as required or assigned.
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
Education:
- Pursuant to Career Service requirements.
- A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- The completion of military or equivalent civilian gunsmith trade school and/or program is required.
- A bachelor's degree in a related field is highly desired.
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience is required.
- Certification as an Armorer is highly desired.
- Certifications/courses in firearms safety is desired.
- Certification by Colorado P.O.S.T. as an Assistant Firearms Instructor is desired.
- Knowledge of handling firearms in a safe manner and safe range operations
- Knowledge of firearms nomenclature, maintenance, and repairs
- Knowledge of less lethal shotgun and less lethal launcher nomenclature, maintenance, and repairs

- Certification as an Armorer for Glock, Remington, and one or more revolvers is required.
Essential Personnel:
When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.

- Hand tools (screwdrivers and hammers), power tools, bench blocks, files, pin punches, calipers, cleaning kits (solvents), torque wrench, air compressor, etc.
