Salary: $73,542 - $99,807

Position Summary:

The District is looking for an Assistant Director of Compliance to assist the Executive Director of Student Affairs & Advocacy with monitoring, training, reporting, and enforcement with respect to the district's compliance with all of the federal and state civil rights laws and regulations (including IDEA, Title IX, and Section 504) that are applicable to the district; adoption and management of District policies; and management and tracking of audits. The Assistant Director of Compliance will assist in the investigatory response and project management of implementation of contractual obligations that arise from any governmental regulatory actions, including but not limited to actions taken by the United States Department of Education, Department of Justice, and Michigan Department of Education. This position requires experience with, and commitment to, ensuring equal opportunities for ethnic, racial, and religious, and other minority populations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) required

  • 3-5 years progressively more responsible related experience, including a minimum of 2 years' experience in the practice of law, civil rights advocacy, human resources, or compliance.

  • K-12 School District experience preferred

  • Experience interacting with law enforcement personnel preferred

Essential Functions:

  • Investigation of Title VII, Title IX, Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, ADA, and ADEA complaints. Fact-finding and Resolution Conferences Monitor compliance with Title VII, Title IX, ADA, and ADEA to ensure a positive, productive, equitable work environment and to prevent discriminatory workplace practices.

  • Collaborate/provide consultation to managerial staff, labor groups, and Human Resources staff; including field/investigative complaint assistance to effectively monitor and resolve civil rights complaints and advise with respect to disciplinary issues.

  • Receive, process and manage investigation of internal discrimination complaints; including complaints of sexual harassment.

  • Maintain appropriate files in a confidential manner consistent with federal and state regulations.

  • Provide official response to discrimination/harassment complaints filed with Michigan Department of Civil Rights, U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U. S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, and other agencies with jurisdiction over such matters.

  • Review federal and state law, district policy, work rules and labor-contracts to reach finding on discrimination/harassment issues.

  • Facilitate In-service training on civil rights issues for staff and students.

  • Assist administrators/supervisors in the interpretation of school district work rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Develop policy and administrative guidelines.

  • Provide high levels of customer service through effective and positive interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a variety of stakeholders and patrons, ability to work in a team environment.

  • Interact effectively with principals and teachers, parents, law enforcement officers, lawyers, senior District office staff, and the general public.

  • Regularly support the Executive Director of Student Affairs & Advocacy in other job duties and functions related to the work of Equity, Advocacy, & Civil Rights.

  • Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Affairs & Advocacy (or Designee).
