March- October 6:30am-3:30pm. Occasional and sporadic night, weekend, and Holiday work may also be required.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING (DESCRIPTION):
In this position you will perform a variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of parks, greenways, and athletic fields, usually working as a part of a crew. Work involves athletic field preparation and landscape and grounds maintenance tasks in operational and undeveloped park properties. Employees are accountable for the safety of parks, fields and greenways and related Town liability and must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self. Employees are subject to hazards in parks maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils. Work is performed under regular supervision and reviewed through observation, for timely completion of assignments and public acceptance of work quality.

A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS (DUTIES & TASKS):

  • Performs a variety of landscape and grounds maintenance duties to include mowing, trimming, edging, spraying and blowing to ensure beautification and safety of parks, greenways and undeveloped park land.
  • Follows guidelines set in Turf management program and participates in seeding, fertilizing, irrigating, mulching, aeration and sodding of Town park grounds and fields to include school sites with joint use agreements.
  • Operates chain saws, weedeaters, and other light equipment to cut, prune and trim shrubbery and trees in parks and trails; removes fallen limbs and trash; blows and rakes leaves and removes litter and debris from grounds.
  • If assigned to athletics, lines and prepares athletic fields and courts for play; ensures field is safe and not too wet or soft; removes rocks and fills holes; ensures home plate is properly mounded.
  • Makes visual inspections of parks, greenways and fields and reports any property or structures in need of repair.
  • Sets up tables and chairs in rooms as requested and sets up equipment for special events and festivals.
  • Performs operational checks on equipment and vehicles used in the work, and performs minor preventive maintenance on equipment as needed.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal and works with other Town departments as needed and assigned.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED (MINIMUM MUST-HAVES):

  • Graduation from high school and some grounds maintenance or landscaping experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina drivers license.

WITH THE ABILITY TO...(KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES):

  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled landscape and grounds maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the area of assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
  • Some knowledge of the application of information technology to the work.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned tools and equipment.
  • Skill in teamwork and customer contact.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of hand tools and equipment including mowers, weed-eaters, blowers and related equipment.
  • Ability to maintain records of work activities.
  • Ability to use hand tools.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public.

WHAT WOULD SET YOU APART (PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS):

In addition to the must-haves listed above, it would be great if you happen to have:

  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certification (required or within 6 months of hire)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to use hand tools, operate mobile equipment such as the mowers and chain saws in a safe manner and to inspect work quality.
