Job description

The Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC) Specialist provides assistive technology (AT) and AAC services to students with disabilities so that they may access and benefit from their program of education. The AAC specialist works under the supervision of a special education administrator and in collaboration with the district’s Assistive Technology Specialist .

The AAC Specialist will work on behalf of students at all grade levels, from preschool through post-secondary education, in the following capacities:

  • Makes recommendations regarding the purchase, repair and replacement of AAC/AT devices.
  • Programs all AAC devices
  • Functions as a member of the special education team in providing special education services to students with disabilities.
  • Provides direct and indirect AAC services as specified on students’ IEPs.
  • Coordinates the delivery of AAC services with classroom teachers, special education staff and other providers to ensure continuity and consistency in providing comprehensive special education services to students.
  • Maintains an accurate record of services provided.
  • Consults with teachers, school administration, parents and others, as appropriate, regarding students’ AAC needs
  • Provides training to special education teachers, paraprofessionals, parents and others as appropriate, in assisting students in the appropriate use and maintenance of AAC devices.
  • Consults and collaborates with medical and other community providers, as appropriate.
  • Completes AAC evaluations
  • Contributes to the writing of IEPs and progress reports
  • Attends IEP meetings as needed

This is a part time (.6FTE), district-wide position.


Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have a current MA DESE Speech, Language, and Hearing Disorders license and AAC certification
