Position Summary:

The UAA Center for Human Development (CHD) is looking for a dynamic Communication Specialist to assist in the technical execution and implementation of our Center's communication needs. CHD is a Center for Excellence in Disabilities located within the College of Health at the University of Alaska Anchorage. This position will assist our various teams with developing and implementing accessible, plain-language communication plans. This is a hybrid position with a minimum of two days per week in the Anchorage office.

Duties:

10Assist with creating CHD’s communication plan and implementing daily and short- and long-term communication plans and operations related to the plan, including assisting with research and evaluation of communications activities.Essential
10Coordinate and/or assist with communication activities and events (such as conferences and trainings, including coordinating tabling events).Essential
10Disseminate information while ensuring compliance with policy, regulation, grants and contracts.Essential
10Translate materials to plain language.Essential
20In coordination with COH communication specialist and CHD staff assigned to Web and other electronic applications, create, develop, and maintain Web content and other electronic applications, including actively posting on social media (e.g., Facebook, Linked in, Twitter, etc.).Essential
30Create written and audio/video material: Web content, advertising/marketing products, brochures, newsletters, flyers, event schedules, etc. Proofread, edit, layout and modify documents and coordinate the printing, publishing and distribution process. Ensure content is factually correct. Proofread and edit communications materials for grammar, clarity and style.Essential
5Answer routine inquiries, and provide information to internal and external audiences.Essential
5Serve as a technical advisor to CHD staff and faculty and provide communications training as needed.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Demonstrated applicable knowledge in persuasive and informative writing, creation of visual images and multimedia materials in support of communications goals.
  • Knowledge of cross-cultural communications, including translation of technical documents into plain language.
  • Knowledge in selecting appropriate software and tools.
  • Advanced computer skills in graphic design, web design and databases.
  • Ability to manage relational databases.
  • Ability to conduct communications research and evaluation as needed.
  • Ability to lead lower level staff.

Preferred Experience & Education:
Two years experience in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related field. Experience in the disability field preferred.

Required Experience & Education:

Bachelor's degree in PR, Journalism, Communications or related field and two years of experience. Experience in the disability field preferred.



Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, term-funded, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
