TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

The Coordinator of Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the college’s student conduct procedures under the supervision of the Dean of Student Life and Conduct/Chesapeake Campus Dean and serves as the main point of contact between faculty, staff, and students in response to conduct matters. The Coordinator of Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the adjudication of potential violations of the College’s Student Civility Code, maintaining confidential records, and assisting students in understanding their rights and responsibilities as members of the College community.
The Coordinator also provides input into the planning, development, and execution of the goals of Student Affairs by providing input and guidance related to conduct, that ultimately supports the larger campus and college strategic priorities. The Coordinator reports to the Dean of Student Life and Conduct/Chesapeake Campus Dean and works closely with several other members of the Student Affairs leadership team. The position is a “Coordinator” level position in the VCCS organizational structure.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. The Coordinator of Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the College’s student conduct program under the supervision of the Dean of Student Life and Conduct/Chesapeake Campus Dean and serves as a liaison between faculty, staff, and college members in response to conduct matters.
2. The Coordinator of Student Conduct is responsible for the administration of the adjudication of potential violations of college policy and/or the Student Code of Conduct, maintaining statistical and confidential records, and assisting students in understanding their rights and responsibilities as members of the college community.
3. Ensures that student conduct is administered in a fair, impartial, non-adversarial, restorative, and educational manner.
4. Provides proactive education, training, and outreach for faculty, staff, and students on behavior expectations and guidelines, student code of conduct, and all related topics including drug and alcohol training, civility, interpersonal relations, Title IX, and current trends in student conduct.
5. Serves as a resource on complex legal issues evolving in higher education and serves as a student conduct consultant, clarifying procedures and options available to faculty, staff, students, and student hearing boards in response to student behaviors.
6. Maintains all student conduct records, including management of related software and its use campus-wide and other tools utilized to report and record issues related to student conduct and judicial affairs and assures compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
7. Conducts an annual review of the Code of Conduct and student conduct processes and recommends appropriate revisions and provides statistical reports and summaries for various departments and agencies regarding caseloads, types of conduct cases, and outcomes.
8. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Dean of Student Life and Conduct/Chesapeake Campus Dean.
Contributes to the overall success of the Office of the Dean of Students by performing all other duties assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
Minimum Qualifications
1. Demonstrated knowledge of and work experience in academic administration in higher education. Work experience in student conduct and Title IX at the community college level and in a large, complex organization preferred.
2. Demonstrated experience and expertise in student development theory and student conduct process, and applicable laws such as the Clery Act, Department of Alcohol and Prevention requirements, and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
3. Demonstrated experience and expertise in student conduct, and a background demonstrating success in dealing with students, parents, administrators, and faculty.
4. Ability to make first-rate oral and written presentations and to negotiate and communicate effectively while establishing cooperative working relationships with a diverse array of individuals.
5. Knowledge of budgetary processes, preferably as they apply to higher education.
6. General knowledge of student success at the college level is preferred.
7. Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the comprehensive mission of community colleges.
8. Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, preferably in a discipline related to student personnel administration, higher education administration, or a related field.
