General Summary:

The Data Analyst is responsible for data cleaning and processing, data management, creation of codebooks and user guides, and report writing. This position will report to the Senior Director of Research and Innovation and work in close partnership with the Supportive Reentry staff, the Policy and Advocacy Department, as well as with external staff from connected partner agencies, in particular with the Supportive Reentry Network Healthcare Transformation Collaborative pilot (SRNC), which prioritizes individuals returning to the community who have been released from either the Illinois Department of Corrections and/or Cook County Jail since March 2020. The Data Analyst will provide valuable insights to our conversations around data and reporting which will help frame the data for storytelling purposes to internal and external audiences. Additionally, the Data Analyst should also be prepared to provide internal training/education to assist staff in finding the practical value in data and reports such as enhanced efficiency and effectiveness in their work, ultimately fostering more Salesforce adoption and consistent utilization. The Data Analyst role is fully remote.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Tracking, Documenting, and Reporting

  • With supervision and guidance by the Senior Director of Research and Innovation, assist with the processing of raw data obtained from the SRNC pilot project and provide support in data systems maintenance, reporting and innovation for Safer’s Supportive Reentry division.
  • Participate in the building and maintenance of databases and interface between Safer and external systems.
  • Conduct data consistency and data quality checks, including verification of external partners’ data crosschecked against internal data.
  • Participate in analysis of data and contribute towards systems feedback based on trends and indicators.
  • Support Safer Supportive Reentry Division program managers to gather data and collaborate on internal and external reporting and systems development/maintenance.

Stakeholder Interface and Service

  • Be comfortable communicating with internal and external stakeholders and facilitating communications and collaborative data gathering.
  • Be comfortable navigating Salesforce databases, building reports and dashboards, present on findings in various settings to diverse audiences.
  • Write and edit technical reports and training materials, including processing and editing in Word, creation of charts, graphs, and tables in Excel, etc.
  • Assist the project in other areas, including data analysis, writing tutorials to instruct users about how to create and analyze data, assisting with user help, and compiling information about protocols and instruments used in other similar studies.

Stakeholder Outreach and Recruitment

  • Participate in stakeholder outreach and recruitment when relevant.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Have knowledge or demonstrated understanding of the criminal legal system, reentry, and mental wellness.
  • Experience in the development, processing, editing, and analysis of social science survey data and large data sets.
  • Demonstrated competency in social science statistics, including producing and assessing descriptive statistics, evaluating outliers, and handling missing data.
  • Ability to utilize multiple virtual platforms and databases
  • Experience with qualitative research or mixed methodology research a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to subset, merge, and restructure complex data files
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit technical reports and training materials, including processing and editing in Word, creation of charts, graphs, and tables in Excel, etc.
  • Experience in identifying and solving data problems and applying sample design and rules.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment, excellent interpersonal skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Self-directed, organized, and highly attentive to detail.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects on tight deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 4 or more years of experience with management and analysis of social science survey data (relevant education and project involvement will be considered).
  • Demonstrated competency in statistics, including producing and assessing descriptive statistics, evaluating outliers, and handling missing data.
