THE POSITION: Design Manager, Retail
As The Shade Store continues to rapidly expand our national footprint, we are seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our team. The Design Manager requires strong design and project management skills. This role serves as an integral part of the design team to ensure that design and brand guidelines are met and that projects are delivered with quality and on time. The Design Manager will manage and oversee projects and asset libraries, while collaborating with internal and external partners.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop store layouts from sketch form to schematic design for internal review and further development into CAD documents and 3D renderings.
- Ensure proposed showroom designs align with landlord criteria while maintaining conceptual intent.
- Create high quality brand design solutions in fast paced environment.
- Manage cross-functional teams such as architects, millworkers, and consultants, and train as necessary to align with store design processes and procedures.
- Responsible for design and detailing of fixtures and product displays. Oversee development with millwork vendor.
- Manage the development and issuance of design development and construction document sets, including coordination of work with consulting architects.
- Present design proposals to landlord for review and negotiate approvals for maximum visibility and presence of the brand.
- Review construction drawings, details, shop drawings and finishing sample submittals to ensure design intent and budgets are maintained.
- Support construction team through various construction administration tasks such as reviewing shop drawings and fielding or redirecting RFIs.
- Assist in the presentation of design concept and boards at Design, Architectural and Historical Review Board Meetings (ARB) as required by local jurisdictions.
- Ensure that designs per showroom location are within budget and assess and recommend value engineering initiatives as needed.
- Collaborate with Construction Managers and Senior members of Design Team to resolve critical design and detailing issues during construction.
- Follow up with potential punch list items from internal partners after project completion.
- Attend and produce notes for meetings with business partners.
- Take project ownership and manage schedules to ensure company goals and annual operating plan is met.
- Collaborate with internal business teams after showroom openings to gather feedback and adjust showroom designs accordingly.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Professional degree in Architectural Design
- 7+ years of experience in retail design, architecture and construction
- Expert knowledge of retail design and environments
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and effectively execute several projects simultaneously with condensed timelines
- Knowledgeable in working with high end materials, furniture and finishes
- Prior experience in furniture design and detailing
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Word, Excel required.
- Working knowledge of Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat & Illustrator
- Ability to render with 3ds Max, Revit & Sketchup is a plus
- Uncompromising attention to detail
- Strong organizational, project management and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills as well as flexibility/adaptability
- Ability to set priorities with strong initiative while focusing on the importance of teamwork
- Ability to travel when required
