Emergency Generator Technician
Job description
The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects, and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.
- Operating, maintaining, repairing, and exercising/testing, as applicable, all emergency generators, connections, and transfer switches on each campus.
- Co-coordinating and supervising Semi-annual Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) maintenance activities for all of the Standby Generators on our system (currently 140).
- Performing troubleshooting procedures and processes on generators to determine the problem cause and developing repair methods, parts requirements, repair priorities, and schedules.
- Performing inspection services on all electric system equipment and facilities to determine maintenance needs and establishing priorities for repair and maintenance.
- Performing other duties may be required or requested in the normal scope of operations.
- Overtime may be required.
- This is an mandatory position and may be required to work when the University is closed.
Associate’s Degree in Electronics; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, fixtures, and generators.
- Working knowledge is of all applicable codes, safety precautions, and methods of installation and repair.
- Skilled in the use of tools, materials, and equipment of electrical trades.
- Ability to assume responsibility as a lead person.
- Ability to read blueprints and drawings of projects and be able to follow those layouts.
- Ability to use various electronic instruments, meters and testers that record data of systems and equipment operation.
- Working knowledge of hand tools, machines, and substances typical of electrical trade.
- Ability to operate both electric and hand powered tools and use lift trucks in performance of duties and a working knowledge of general shop tools and equipment.
- Possess or have the ability to obtain competent knowledge to serve as a competent person for confined space.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Four years of progressive experience in all phases of construction, maintenance or repair of emergency generators.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- NC Driver’s license within 60 days of employment.
