Field Research Specialist - Specialty Crops-East

The successful candidate will join an agile team that is focused on testing enzymes, proteins, and biological chemicals for development of agricultural products. We are seeking a Field Research Specialist that understands and applies current crop production techniques in an agricultural field research setting across eastern North America and leads field teams to execute single-day and multi-day trips to conduct field trial activities. The region generally runs east to west from the Atlantic seaboard to the Mississippi River and far eastern Ontario, and north to south through Canada and the United States.

  • Works in a matrixed organization to support Field Research Leads, R&D scientists, and Commercial partners to design, implement, and report field programs evaluating product performance through field trials, grower trials, and other contracted research, primarily for horticulture crops across the eastern North America market
  • Leads teams of Field Research Associates on regular long-day and overnight trips that may include planting, field plot maintenance including applications, in-season data collection, harvest, plot assessments including post-harvest, UAV flights and data analysis, trial summary analysis and reporting across the extended local region
  • Supports the development and refinement of field trial protocols and standard operating procedures
  • Assists with all trial logistics that may include seed treatment, fertilizer impregnation, treatment preparation, and equipment organization as needed
  • Generates, reports, and presents trial data to internal and external stakeholders
  • Learns, utilize, maintains, and supports internal software platforms such as various APIs, ELN, Plot Phenix, Agroview, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint and especially the ARM suite of trial management software for the analysis, organization, reporting and cataloging of field data
  • Additional responsibilities may be added at the discretion of management

Required Experience

  • A Bachelors’ degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Soil Science or other related field and at least 1 years of appropriate work experience within an agronomic or plant research environment is required.
  • Strong knowledge of trial design, crop production, farming practices, and some farming equipment operation is preferred.
  • Able to lead small field teams and work with grower staff to conduct field trials.
  • Working knowledge of crop related statistical analyses is highly desirable.
  • Ability to get and hold FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) licenses and State Pesticide Applicators Licenses
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours and extended work trips during the peak planting, growing and harvest seasons is required
  • Estimated 25% overnight travel: growing season trial visits, harvest needs, industry conferences, and commercial meetings may be required.
  • Energetic and self-motivated individual able to work in a team environment with an eagerness to develop, learn and adopt new methods
  • Understanding of trial design principles
  • Demonstrated ability to balance and prioritize tasks
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
  • Working experience Microsoft Office, especially Power Point and Excel
  • Experience with ARM desired

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • The worker is subject to outside environmental conditions. No effective protection from the weather.
  • The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 for periods of more than one hour. Consideration should be given to the effect of other environmental conditions, such as wind and humidity.
  • Those with this position must be able to work in Biosafety Level 1 and 2 Laboratories which can cause more illnesses to those with immunocompromised systems.
