GIS Specialist
Job description
WORK HOURS: 8:00 AM TO 5:00 PM
The purpose of this position is to create and organize spatial and tabular data through the City’s geographic information systems (GIS). Employee functions at professional entry level, under supervision, to perform work technical in nature, and is responsible for updating and maintaining moderately complex database information using current technologies. The incumbent assists other departments with the production of maps and performing spatial analysis to assist decision-making and supports other department staff on basic functionality and use of GIS applications. Work includes customer service functions to provide GIS data and information to both internal and external customers and support other GIS-related applications within the division.
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Performs GIS technical functions; generates and assembles computer maps for specific purposes in response to requests from both internal and external customers.- Organizes, creates, manipulates, enters, and retrieves GIS data for reporting, analysis, and presentation purposes.
- Assists in the enterprise-wide installation of GIS software; performs software release updates and installs.
- Must have operational knowledge of GIS specialized software including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and other computer mapping applications. Maintains system proficiency with the use and capabilities of the selected GIS software as the system capacity expands.
- Assists in the design and development of department-specific GIS web applications.
- Provide system support for Cityworks asset management and work order software, assist in the implementation and support of other applications, and serve as a technical resource for the department. Provides training for department users.
- Attends meetings and training workshops to maintain current knowledge of trends and developments in the field.
- Assist in other projects as instructed by GIS Manager.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires an Associate Degree in geographic information systems or other related technology field supplemented by (2) years of experience in geographic science, computerized mapping systems, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.- Experience with Cityworks preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state driver’s license.

Mathematics:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
Reasoning:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
