Good Harvest Market, Waukesha County’s largest natural food store, is looking for an experienced, energetic full-time manager to lead our grocery department team.
Ordering, budgeting, managing, stocking, and merchandising are all important; but this successful store is known for great customer service. The individual chosen will be the one who most exemplifies Good Harvest Market and all it stands for.
Qualified candidates must have experience in retail management, with at least 2 years of grocery management and buyer experience.

Full Job Description:
Position: Grocery Manager
Reports to: General Manager
Supervises: Assistant Grocery Manager, Grocery Stockers
Purpose: To oversee the selection, pricing and promotion of products to meet store objectives for sales, margin, labor, and customer service. To supervise grocery clerks, ensuring proper scheduling and training to meet store objective and mission standards.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Customer Service
- Knows and adheres to quality standards for customer service, leads staff by example.
- Greets all customers, offers suggestions/answers as needed.
- Adheres to all guidelines around product recommendation and information.
- Assists in any other departments as needed.
Personnel Management
- Work with Human Resources to hire qualified applicants.
- Ensure thorough on-the-job training of new team members, and ongoing training and development of current staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations within the month they are due.
- Take disciplinary action as needed following established policies.
- Monitor hours for grocery staff within budget and review payroll records. Develop master schedule.
- Organize and attend meetings for staff as needed.
- Ensure department staff is informed of storewide meetings and policy changes.
- Ensure safe working practices and safety training for department staff.
Merchandising
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices and terms, quality and delivery, following Good Harvest Market product guidelines.
- Attend meetings to plan promotions, product mix decisions, store merchandising and advertising.
- Set standards for stocking. Oversee grocery staff members in maintaining an attractive and fully stocked store.
- Ensure that department buyers follow signage standards.
- Coordinate planning of store layout and product locations for sales volume, aesthetics and shopping and stocking efficiency.
- Monitor store resets and give feedback to General Manager.
- Visit other stores for ideas on promotions and displays.
Purchasing
- Set guidelines for department in ordering to obtain favorable prices, terms, quality and delivery.
- Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
- Review department financial reports and take action where needed to meet sales, margin, turns and labor goals.
- Attend trade shows when applicable.
- Ensure preparation for inventory counts.
- Ensure a fresh and dynamic grocery product mix by reviewing movement reports, discontinuing slow-movers, and picking up new items.
- Place grocery special orders for customers. Review all grocery product requests.
- Monitor ingredients of all grocery items to conform to GHM product standards.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in setting sales, margin and labor goals for department. Review financial reports of departments’ performance and take corrective action as needed.
- Assist with coverage in departments as needed.
- Attend management team meetings and storewide meetings.
- Perform other tasks assigned by General Manager.
- Perform Manager on Duty shifts as assigned.
- Assist customers in all departments, in prompt friendly courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
- Answer & route phone calls.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A minimum of two years supervisory experience - hiring, training, taking disciplinary action, evaluating and directing work flow.
- Preferably a minimum of two years of purchasing experience in a grocery store, specifically product knowledge of items buyers are purchasing. Experience developing systems and procedures.
- Open availability, regular and predictable attendance.
- Point of Sale system familiarity.
- Ability to identify trends in the marketplace, and to appropriately apply that knowledge to the store. Ability to maintain accurate records and to prioritize workload. Ability to work closely with others. Strong organizational skills and the ability to motivate and lead others to achieve department goals. Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
- High School education or GED preferred, but not required.
- Familiarity with natural foods and organic products preferred.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, position includes frequent standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and sitting.
- Ability to safely operate department equipment (baler, pallet jacks, pallets, etc.)
- Must be able to see/read financial reports, company documentation, and other job related information
- Hearing is required to converse with customers and team.
- Ability to compose and write reports, business correspondence, including effective departmental memos, disciplinary notes/documents etc
- Ability to use a computer (internet, basic data entry and word processing, spreadsheets).
- Ability to prioritize, troubleshoot, and make important decisions wisely.
- Must speak fluent English.
- Excellent listening skills and ability to give clear instructions.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills. Outstanding customer service ability. Ability to interact with the public in a positive and friendly manner.
