We are seeking a HR Generalist who will administer the human resources activities of the Department of Urology. This position will also be responsible for the overall direction and management of projects related to personnel and business activities within the department and will include the coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects. The position will ensure consistency with department strategy, commitments and goals.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Human Resources

  • Responsible for a wide range of human resources support to the department’s faculty, staff, supervisors and administration covering the following:
  • Recruitment and employment; diversity awareness needs assessment; identification of professional development opportunities; compensation administration and analysis; benefits administration; employer relations (including grievance resolution, disciplinary action, layoffs, termination); training and education; information management; benefits interpretation, education and application; personal records management, HR policy interpretation as well as information dissemination.

Employment Compensation

  • Responsible for coordinating the employment process by working with faculty, staff, administration and appropriate university offices to ensure efficient and smooth process in accordance with all applicable University and Johns Hopkins Health System offices policies and procedures. This includes:
  • Provide guidance and make recommendations on appropriate starting salaries and promotional salaries for staff to ensure maintaining balance of equity
  • Advise the department administrator and assistant administrator on matters concerning penetration of pay grades and equity of employee groups. Seek advice when necessary
  • Make internal job comparisons for equity purposes
  • Provide consultation to the manager and employees on: tax information, sick time, vacation time, holidays, leave of absence, family medical leave, payroll, tuition reimbursement, flexible fringe benefits, deductions, etc.
  • Serve as the liaison of School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Health System, employment recruiters and compensation analysts as it relates to personnel requisitions for the department
  • Coordinate visa process for international staff
  • Develop job descriptions for new positions
  • Prepare personnel requisitions for submission to be approved by Urology administrator and assistant administrator. Make offers of employment on behalf of the University School of Medicine and Health System.
  • Conduct reference checks
  • Interview applicants
  • Monitor time and attendance forms for staff via E210 system
  • Serve on various committees and task forces, actively participates in discussion, brings in both personal and organizational units specific prospectus on issues. Recommends new policies and modifications to current human resources policies, procedures and programs.

HR Management

  • Responsible for answering questions when faculty and staff want interpretation of HR policies and procedures related to recruitment employment positions, FMLA, STD (short term disability), time keeping (E210) and Health System SAP, and BW.
  • Contact School and/or Health System human resources offices for advice as needed.

Employee Relations

  • Manage grievance process by investigating grievance and gathering information. Advise management on firing and disciplinary decisions with guidance from department administrator and /or assistant administrator.
  • Gather sensitive information for the administrator and/or assistant administrator regarding grievances, disciplinary actions and other personnel matters.
  • Assist with compiling vital information and composing disciplinary letters to include consultation with General Counsel as needed.
  • Responsible for exit interviews for those employees terminating or transfer signing of original time records, retrieval of badges, answering questions relating to final pay check, etc.

Project Responsibilities

  • Is responsible for the overall direction and management of personnel and business related projects, which will include planning, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of specific projects as assigned by the administrator.
  • In conjunction with department leadership, develops detailed business plans for new and existing programs to include capital needs, facilities, operational requirement and implementation plans.
  • Plans time tables to ensure projects remain on schedule with strategic planning and implementation.
  • Communicates effectively on a regular basis to Urology administrator and assistant administrator.
  • Serves on various organizational committees, performing related duties and keeping Urology administrator and assistant administrator up to date on and issues/concerns affecting the department.
  • Operates independently and makes contacts throughout the organization.
  • Actively participates in discussion.
  • Brings in both department and organizational specific prospective on issues.
  • Makes recommendations on procedures and programs.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to work for long periods of time without direction.
  • Ability to prioritize work as needed.
  • Ability to work with flexibility on several tasks simultaneously and to meet various concurrent deadlines. Very strong organizational skills, analytical and problem solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Need to maintain confidentiality.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written.
  • Ability to effectively interact of all levels of the University and hospital employees as well as outside contractors.
  • Working knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, employment laws and regulations, employee relations practices, positive work environment concepts, issue/dispute resolution techniques, employment practices, talent management practices, compensation administration, communication skills, coaching skills, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and HR systems and applications.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or other related field required.
  • Master’s Degree and/or professional HR certification highly preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of progressive experience in a professional human resources capacity required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $51,210.00 - $71,890.00 per year
