Basic Purpose and Function:

This skilled position is responsible for removing, repairing/replacing and reinstalling equipment and machinery components for repairs to ships and vessels in the United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, Military Sealift Command (MSC), and commercial vessels. He/She must be able to complete and execute the assigned work tasks following regulatory specifications assigned to the vessel.

Skills & Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position will require accessing the ship with the capability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Applicant must be able to:

  • Remove, repair, overhaul and install ships equipment and machinery.
  • Rig equipment and machinery in and out of the interior ship compartments.
  • Use hand and power tools to remove and reinstall equipment and machinery.
  • Understand and comply with hazardous material disposal.
  • Regularly work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Work non-standard work hours, as required.
  • Lift-up to 50 lbs.

Education and Experience:

  • Two (2+) years of relevant marine experience preferred.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Proven working knowledge of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Standard Items.
  • Working knowledge of local NAVSEA Standard Items, with a specific focus in the Southeast Regional Maintenance Center (SERMC).

Major Responsibility (Functions/Duties):

  • Possesses the ability to fully operate lathes, milling machines, horizontal and vertical boring mills, grinders, planners, planner mills and portable on site machine equipment performing various machine operations up to but not limited to cutting, boring, turning, threading, and polishing.
  • Studies work specifications, tech manuals, manufacturer s drawings and blueprints or sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, must understand the MSDS manual.
  • Measures, marks and scribes' dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guidelines for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on various machine shop machinery.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, depth, and angle of cut.
  • Verifies conformance of finished work to specifications, ensuring quality and on time delivery of finished work.
  • Fits, assembles parts, and verifies dimensions and alignment of assemblies. Understanding of interference fits, expansion and shrinking of different metals.
  • Must possess the ability to use all precision measuring instruments, examples are dial indicators, tape measures, veneer calipers and micrometers
  • Perform all lower grade class duty functions of inside machinist second class through inside machinist third class.
  • Show a basic understanding of the inspection and use of various rigging equipment.
  • Must have knowledge in basic hand signals for communicating with crane operators
  • Ability to use power tools and basic hand tools to complete tasks assigned.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $24 - $28 hourly
