About the Instructional Designer:

Virginia State University is seeking a highly skilled Instructional Designer.

The overall objective of the Instructional Designer is to provide as an extension of our land-grant mission access to high-quality educational opportunities for traditional and non-traditional students through the use of technology and exemplary support services.

The Instructional Designer position is responsible for participating in the development of courses and maintaining of relationships with faculty and facilitating the development of their online courses.

The position works with faculty, and other online team members to support online instructional design for the VSU Online enterprise and Cardinal Education (formerly CGEP). The Instructional Designer will provide project oversight and guides the entire development process, including initiating initial project meetings, obtaining feedback from key stakeholders, implementing revisions, ensuring expected progress, and drafting progress reports. The Instructional Designer will all provide course assessment and participate in the roll-out of course pilots and related evaluation plans.

Extensive experience in the following;
  • Experience using design applications such as those in Adobe Creative Cloud and instructional and course authoring tools such as Articulate, Captivate, Lectora, Camtasia, etc .
  • Excellent knowledge of the application of instructional design theory in online delivery
  • Experience using learning management systems such as Blackboard, Canvas, Moodle, Brightspace, etc.
  • Experience working with subject matter experts or faculty members to design, develop, and evaluate distance learning courses and programs




Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for Entry:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design and educational technology best practice in the context of higher education online and/or blended programming
  • Proficiency with Blackboard, Moodle, Canvas, or proprietary LMS, along with LMS tool integrations
  • Knowledge of assessment and evaluation methods
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects through instructional design project management practices


Abilities:
  • Ability to solve complex problems under time pressure.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new software.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to evaluate content to determine its appropriateness for target audiences
  • Ability to read, comprehend, analyze and interpret concepts, documents, and data
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and communicate effectively with supervisor and stakeholders on a cross-functional team and deliver results under prescribed deadlines Ability to define and manage his/her own work processes towards specified team objectives
  • Strong creative and process thinking abilities.
  • Excellent organizational and management abilities.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated skills in developing team-based, collaborative and/or project-based courses and curricula.
  • Excellent oral, aural, visual, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in developing online and/or blended programming that creatively leverages new-technologies.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred, but Not Required:
  • Extensive experience in Blackboard Learning Management System Administration experience
  • Experience with Java Script, HTML, DHTML XML, PHP
  • Master’s Degree
