This position will be in support of the Office of Technology Transfer within Research Administration & Innovation Management at HJF.
The responsibilities of the Manager of Intellectual Property covers a broad range of scientific and legal activities relating to the administration and management of intellectual property. The position works directly with the Sr. Director of Technology Transfer and the IP Specialist in the management of HJF’s intellectual property portfolio and performs technical and legal analyses of invention disclosures, patent applications and patent office actions.
In this position, the incumbent interacts with inventors, scientists, outside patent counsel, and other members of the technology transfer team on a daily basis both in-person and by video/telephone.
Responsibilities:- Management of the HJF patent prosecution by developing strategy, evaluating and authorizing the activities of outside patent counsel on behalf of HJF.
- Responsible for fulfilling HJF’s obligations for patent prosecution under license agreements;
- Manage incoming intellectual property by analyzing invention disclosures and providing technical and legal evaluation of their scientific merit, patentability, and competitive landscape, in coordination with the Directors of Technology Transfer.
- Promote the expansion of HJF’s intellectual property portfolio by educating internal and external customers on technology transfer, invention disclosure process, patent law and commercialization strategy.
- Assist in the development of operating procedures, policies, and goals to improve operations as they relate to intellectual property management.
- Collaborates with Technology Transfer office staff to ensure that the proper agreements are in place with co-owners of intellectual property and that marketing materials of innovations are generated.
- Assist in the management of HJF’s patent budget, review and approval of all patent expenses, and management of patent annuity services in conjunction with the Intellectual Property Specialist.
- Responsible for developing a comprehensive knowledge of the IP database to utilize and update the information on patent prosecution and technology management issues as appropriate.
- Works with the Intellectual Property Specialist to ensure HJF’s compliance with Bayh-Dole regulations for federally funded inventions including reporting to sponsoring agencies through iEdison and other mechanisms.
- Works with the Directors to determine which inventions need to be presented to the monthly Joint Patent and Technology Review Group meetings; to develop the meeting agenda; and to summarize and act on the outcome of the meetings and discuss the outcome/recommendations with the inventors.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Self-starter with excellent analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated skills in handling complex inter- and intra-organizational issues in a timely manner and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to assist in the management of a large portfolio of technologies with diverse subject matter.
- Ability to present material in a concise and professional manner to a wide variety of individuals and groups, including faculty, staff, attorneys, and business people.
- Detailed knowledge of patent law and practice in the US and some knowledge of foreign patent practice is essential.
- General knowledge of technology transfer, licensing and business principles is desired, as well as a high degree of computer proficiency, including knowledge of intellectual property management systems, is preferred.
- Ability to interact creatively and harmoniously with co workers, inventors, and outside business professionals is essential.
Physical Capabilities
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
- This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
- Master’s Degree required. Doctoral Degree preferred.
- Minimum of 6-8 years’ experience required.
- Registration as a Patent Agent or Attorney preferred.
