Job description
THE LIST
1. If you’re renting a car in San Diego, be sure to inform the rental agency that you will be driving the car in Mexico. We can only speak for Hertz, but if you rent through them you are given a form at checkout that you sign stating you are approved for driving in Mexico.
2. Make sure your rental car has California plates. Rental cars come from all over but in Mexico, anything other than California is a red flag for police. For that reason, they pull cars over frequently that have license plates from states other than California.
3. When working in Mexico you must have an FMM to work in the plant. If you do not have a valid FMM you will not be permitted to enter the facility. An image of the form is below. You can submit for the form online at the following address. Instituto Nacional de Migración - Forma Migratoria Múltiple (inm.gob.mx). PLEASE NOTE. You must still stop at the border to get this online form stamped. If you do not have an online form they have blanks that you can fill out and get stamped at the border. The office to get the FMM stamped is on the right as you cross the border at Otay Mesa. You will go through a S type turn to the right. Go slow and do not go too far as if you do you must come back into the US and then cross the border again to get to the office. The form is good for one week, if you will be coming to the Mexico for a longer time you can pay a small fee to get a form that is valid for 6 months.
4. When crossing the border, use the Otay La Mesa border crossing and avoid San Ysidro. San Ysidro is the crossing that you get to by taking Route 5 south all the way from the airport into Mexico. This crossing is extremely busy and difficult to get to the building to get your work visas FMM. To get to Otay La Mesa, Take Route 5 South until you can get on 905 East, then you’ll see the signs. You can use this link: San Diego International Airport to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Otay Mesa Port of Entry - Google Maps
5. When commuting to the plant, there are multiple addresses that come up when searching for Eaton. Use this direct map pin to ensure you’re headed in the right direction: Eaton Industries Maquila
+52 664 978 1600.
6. GPS on your phone doesn’t work great in Mexico. Often we would be navigating somewhere and the GPS would reset our location multiple times and it was easy to get lost. Map out your route beforehand or follow someone that knows exactly how to get there if possible until you are used to the route. The Eaton ME’s traveling on rotation are there every week and can help with directions and logistics. We found Google Maps and Waze were the best map programs. Apple maps did not work very well.
7. On the way down from the airport, grab some snacks / lunch items at the Vons on Route 5 (665 Saturn Blvd, San Diego, CA).There is a canteen at the plant, but it was always nice to have snacks throughout the day. If you’re a coffee drinker, the best coffee is in the canteen. There are a number of Keurig machines and places to get hot water so bring k-cups or tea. We drank bottled water.
8. We stayed at the Marrriot in TJ. Tijuana Marriott Hotel, Boulevard Agua Caliente No 11553, Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico 22420. They a full breakfast and restaurant. There is also a Hyatt close to the Marriot for those that prefer Hyatt. The Hyatt is significantly more expensive than the Marriott.
9. We found it very useful to have a Spanish speaking member on the team if possible. It is not impossible without someone that speaks Spanish, but it was helpful for us many times. Our experience was about 40% of people spoke some English, while 60% did not speak any.
10. The roads and traffic in Tijuana are not the same as in the US. There are many potholes and large elevation drops that are not marked. There are also many speed bumps that are not painted so be alert as you are navigating. Driving slow until you are accustomed to the roads and traffic is a good idea.
11. We typically worked from 7AM to 4:30PM. The times may differ depending on need. The drive time from the hotel to the plant was about 35 mins. Due to traffic the route to the plant from the hotel and from the plant to the hotel are different.
If you are leaving the plant and heading to San Diego to fly you should leave the plant by 3PM or so. If you are taking a red eye you should not have a flight before an 8PM departure. The border crossing times can be very unpredictable.
