POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the general direction of the Team Leader, the Peer Specialist provides assistance to people in our Alt. Care Department. The Peer Specialist works with the Clinical Case Managers based on the needs of the clients.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Establishes rapport with peers and works to build a trusting relationship.
- Appropriately discloses personal experiences and shares recovery story to instill hope.
- Provides a supportive environment for listening and then teaching peers how to develop their natural supports
- Helps peers develop their recovery story.
- Seeks out appropriate supervision in difficult situations and responds to feedback
- Assist peers in locating resources to meet their needs
- Teaches and models for peers how to navigate difficult or confusing systems to utilize the services provided
- Teaches peers to become self-sufficient by modeling and encouraging skill development
- Develops resources and shares resources with staff, peers, and other providers
- Coordinates and communicates with the treatment team
- Maintains personal health by following all treatment recommendations (including medications)
- Recognizes personal struggles and seeks support from their supervisor
- Negotiates dual relationships of being a consumer and a provider
- Seeks training for professional and personal development
- Implements evidenced based recovery service initiatives (Bridges, WRAP, wellness coaching, etc.)
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Must have life experiences with mental illness and have received Mental Health services.
- The Peer Specialist must possess a current Missouri Peer Specialist certification.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in a mental health or substance abuse setting and/or with clients who have co-occurring mental health disorders is preferred.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
- Must have successfully completed the Department of Mental Healths Peer Specialist training and successfully passed the certification exam.
SKILLS:
- The ability to work with all persons with multiple challenges (mental illness, substance abuse, physical challenges, developmental disabilities, etc.).
