Job Title: K-8 School Counselor
Supervisor: Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Qualifications:
Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate with Counseling endorsement- Master of Arts in Counseling
- Three (3) years of classroom teaching experience at any grade level
- Knowledgeable in current counseling approaches and behavioral change techniques
- Ability to maintain a working relationship with students, staff and parents
- Ability to function independently and make informed decisions
- Ability to work with a diverse population
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain student records
- Counsel groups or individual students through the development of educational and career plans
- Counsel small groups and individual students with problems; refers severe problems to appropriate community resources
- Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
- Conduct counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers
- Consult with teachers to facilitate the infusion of counseling learning activities into the regular education curricula
- Respond to crisis situations when appropriate
- Assist with district-mandated tests
- Participate in counselor workshops, meetings, seminars, etc.
- Perform other such duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Knowledge of accepted instructional techniques and methods working with children
- Knowledge of data usage, including research, collection, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, and reporting
- Ability to do perform multiple functions simultaneously
- Ability to do detailed mathematical computations
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Produce accurate work and complete assignments with minimal supervision
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations
- Ability to work cooperatively and courteously with staff, students, parents and community members
- Knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws, district procedures and Board policies
- Ability to handle confrontation and conflict without an emotional response
SUMMARY: Provides support to the instructional process as a teacher with specific responsibility for supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas. This includes developing lesson plans and delivering group and/or individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines, collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues. Additionally, the classroom teacher is to respond to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding the instructional program and student progress.
Computer Proficiency: Demonstrated general proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
