Why does the job exist?

Located in the Technical Assistance and Quality Assurance Section of the Air Quality Bureau, this position will support the Bureau's mission of protecting the inhabitants and natural beauty of New Mexico by certifying air monitoring equipment. This includes performing audits, maintaining meteorological equipment/data and purchasing and managing an inventory of parts and supplies.

How does it get done?

  • Certify air monitoring standards and equipment according to schedules for the purpose of collecting high quality data.
  • Perform site audits and accuracy audits on all analyzers and meteorological equipment at sites in northern New Mexico.
  • Maintenance of meteorological equipment and data.
  • Purchase and manage an inventory of spare parts and supplies.
  • This requires research of equipment prices and availability along with maintaining databases.

  • New Mexicans to protect and restore the environment,
  • Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations.

Ideal Candidate

Ideal Candidate will have experience in the following:
  • Practical knowledge gained through experience and/or specific training related to ambient air monitoring equipment,
  • Strong technical skills
  • Capable of handling multiple projects at times.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Most of the time will be spent in a laboratory or office setting using hand tools, personal computer, and a telephone. Field work requires driving long distances, climbing ladders and working on rooftops (sometimes in inclement weather). Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Travel a few days per month to perform fieldwork.
