Job description
The Virginia Department of State Police is seeking qualified applicants for a Relational Database Administrator position in the Information Technology Division located, in North Chesterfield, Virginia. This is an Exempt position; therefore, this position is excluded from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act due to the nature of duties and job responsibilities.

DUTIES:
- Works with the software engineering team to provide support of the Oracle relational database environment. Provides consultation on relational database design, implementation and technical issues to our systems development team. Provides recommendations for upgrades to Oracle relational databases. Provides recommendations for database security. Provides support for database backup and recovery. Works with the Department’s Information Security Officer (ISO) and management to establish policies and procedures for database security. Monitors and optimizes the performance of application systems databases. Identifies and resolves relational database problems. Contacts and informs systems development staff on proper design and implementation of relational databases. Works with development staff to troubleshoot and monitor systems for potential problems. Installs, configures and maintains Oracle system software and related products to ensure correct upgrades, patches and fixes are in place.
- Works with the development team to provide support of the SQL Server relational database environment. Provides consultation on relational database design, implementation and technical issues to our systems development team. Provides recommendations for upgrades to SQL Server relational databases. Provides recommendations for database security. Provides support to database backup and recovery. Works with the Department’s Information Security Officer (ISO) and management to establish policies and procedures for database security. Monitors and optimizes the performance of application systems databases. Identifies and resolves relational database problems. Contacts and informs development staff on proper design and implementation of relational databases. Works with development staff to troubleshoot and monitor systems for potential problems. Installs, configures, and maintains SQL Server system software and related products to ensure correct upgrades, patches and fixes are in place.
- Establishes and maintains a modern, robust, flexible, secure, reliable, and efficient technology environment.
- Ensures training, cross training/knowledge transfer occurs for self, team members, across teams and clients. Keeps up to date on database products and technologies. Assists and provides direction to co-workers in using new techniques and in solving their more complex technical problems.
- Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:

The pre-employment process can take approximately up to three (3) months to complete. The anticipated duration of this process is determined by the successful completion of the above items.
- Considerable knowledge of Oracle database design, administration, utility and tools; of database performance and tuning; and database system and security management, and data migration in a Solaris/Unix environment.
- Skills in the use of laptop computers and using standard Microsoft Office applications. Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of database systems management; to develop Unix scripts and write/develop database standards and documentation; to implement security measures to safeguard relational databases; to establish and maintain an efficient technology environment; to communicate effectively verbally and in writing in English; to work independently and as a member of a team; and to provide training to others on new techniques and solving technical problems.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with major study in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field preferred.
- An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for this education.
