Generalist Assignment Reporter

One of the best small daily news organizations in Wisconsin is seeking a full-time general assignment reporter to cover Portage and Columbia County.

Come join our team and live and work in an area renowned for its history, industry, outdoor recreation and lively arts and music scene. Just 45 minutes from Madison, Portage is close to many of Wisconsin’s top tourist destinations, including the Midwest’s top-rated skiing and snowboarding resort.

We’re looking for someone who can spot the most interesting local stories, whether from a government meeting or something overheard at a coffee shop, and make readers care about them, whether they’re from Portage, Madison or beyond. This is a multifaceted job, covering city and county government, education, public safety, growth and development, and art and culture.

Duties include writing news and feature stories, personality profiles, shooting photos and video, developing sources and deciding which events are newsworthy, with an emphasis on enterprise work. This reporter will create content for wiscnews.com as well as its associated print products, including the Portage Daily Register and the Baraboo News Republic.

At least two years of reporting experience or its equivalent preferred, either at a daily newspaper, internships or student news organization.
