RESEARCH CLERK/BAILIFF - PART-TIME (29 hours per week)
Job description
To qualify for this position you must be enrolled in an accredited law school. Prefer candidates to have some clerking or other legal support experience in a law office or court. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Court Judge and Court Administrator, performs legal research and drafts legal memorandums. Reviews motions requiring legal research, reviews specified files for statutory compliance, and drafts orders for the Judge. Performs the functions of a bailiff, including maintaining courtroom security, directing parties to proper area, swearing in witnesses and jurors and providing general assistance to the Judge. Provides general assistance to court participants on scheduling and procedural information. Escorts and provides for the needs and security of jurors.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited law school or have graduated from an accredited law school.
Experience: Prefer candidates to have some related clerking or legal support experience within a law office or court.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Other Requirements: Preferably licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan. Taser and chemical irritant certification.
Relevant Skills/Specialized Equipment Knowledge:
- Basic office equipment such as telephone, calculator, photocopier, Fax, etc.
- Photographic, audio and video equipment
- Computer programs including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Ability to use a taser and chemical irritants.
- Ability to physically restrain individuals.
- Ability to utilize effective conflict management skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals in an agitated state and from a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Benefit Eligible & No Weekends or Holidays
This is a part time, non-exempt, pay grade I position with the AFSCME Bargaining Unit offering benefits upon hire which include PTO accrual, investment plan enrollment and paid holidays. All other benefits following 90 days of employment and successfully passing the probationary period.
