Job Summary

The Bellevue Youth Theatre (BYT) Resident Director is responsible for directing youth theatre production(s) featuring casts of 30-50 participants, 3 times a year (Fall, Spring, Summer) with an option to direct Spring/Summer Camps and/or lead classes.

Job responsibilities include working with children, neurodivergent, and disabled participants to create engaging and impactful performances; collaborate with creative team on a comprehensive and cohesive vision for the production.; lead participants in games and activities to help foster community. BYT’s mission and commitment to inclusion dictates that directors should prioritize social-emotional development and community-building over production values. This is a collaborative, non-competitive program where everyone receives a role. Therefore, directors should be participant-focused and process-driven as opposed to product/production focused.

The Bellevue Youth Theatre is dedicated to providing theater arts opportunities for all young people, regardless of income or ability. We produce 11 mainstage shows a year in addition to 9 weeks of theatre day camps.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.


  • Plan, organize, and manage pre-production meetings, rehearsals, tech and dress rehearsals, and performances for Bellevue Youth Theatre.
  • Work with stage management and BYT staff to create production schedules.
  • Create and communicate a creative vision for production.
  • Collaboratively hold auditions with other directors (shows audition together). Negotiate casting as needed.
  • Supervise participants during rehearsal. Manage large groups; keep participants on task and focused.
  • Collaborate with theatre technicians and designers to create a unified production.
  • Utilize proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintain a variety of files and records; enter and retrieve information from a computer.
  • Able to work weekends and nights as needed.
  • Train, monitor, and oversee volunteers and assistant directors.
Supervision Received and Exercised:
  • Reports to Community Services Supervisor.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:


  • Theatrical rehearsal and performance protocols.
  • General theatre etiquette.
  • Producing licensed productions.
  • Stage directing; musical direction a bonus, but not required.
  • Schedules and time-management.
  • Working with children and young people, as well as neurodivergent and disabled populations.
Ability to :
  • Collaborate with BYT staff, volunteers, and participants on productions.
  • Communicate with a variety of theatre personnel in a timely and professional manner.
  • Manage large groups of participants.
  • Communicate with stage management, BYT staff, and participants/parents regarding absences, conflicts, and emergencies.
  • Create necessary rehearsal/performance documents including audition notices, cast lists, directors notes, etc.
  • Clearly and respectfully communicate notes/vision with designers, cast, guardians, etc.
  • Create rehearsal routines/rituals that help build community and foster social-emotional development.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Multi-task at a high level of proficiency.
  • Remain calm and clear-headed in stressful or extraordinary circumstances.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education/Training :
  • Some coursework (or equivalent study) in theatre, education, stage directing, musical theatre, or a combination thereof.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Experience :
  • Two years (or equivalent) working with children and/or large groups.
  • Directing experience preferred, acting experience a bonus.
  • Prior work experience in education, customer service, hospitality, and/or working with the public is preferred, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Skill using computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Energetic, reliable, trustworthy, with the ability to work effectively leading a team.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The conditions herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions.
Environment: Office, theatre, and stage environment; exposure to noise, dust. Must work in low light situations.
Physical: Sufficient physical ability to work in a theatre setting. Walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling. May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds.
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment.
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction. The noise level is the work environment is moderate to high.

Definition of a Variable Employee:


  • Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire
  • Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 15 hours per week with an increase during performance weeks.
