School Health/Social Work Consultant
Internal/External

Plan and implement activities supporting Wayne County districts in developing and maintaining quality school social work services and other school health and safety programs and services through professional development, community partnerships, and other Whole Child initiatives that support school improvement.
Provide consultant and leadership services to Wayne County schools to promote quality school social work and school health policies, programs, and services that safely, legally, and effectively address the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide consultation, leadership, and professional development opportunities for quality school social work and school health services to Wayne County school districts and Great Start Readiness Program sites.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource advocate in school social work and school health services for Wayne County districts, Great Start Readiness Program sites, and partnering community agencies.
  • Participate as an active member of the Wayne County Whole Community, Whole School, Whole Child Alliance (WSCCA).
  • Monitor, interpret, synthesize, and disseminate relevant research findings and other information related to public and school health, school social work practice, current legal issues, and new legislation that impacts school health and safety programs and services.
  • Interpret and disseminate model policies, standards, and best practices to promote safe, legal, and effective school health and safety services programs.
  • Explore and support the implementation of reimbursement systems (e.g., Caring 4 Students) and other funding sources (e.g., 31n, 31o, 31p, HRAs) to support school social work and school health and safety programs and services.
  • Collaborate as an active team member in organizational projects as assigned.
  • Work in conjunction with other RESA staff to ensure client needs are met in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Collaborate with local, regional, and state school health advocates to expand the level of knowledge and understanding among educators, parents, and the general public of the critical link between health status and a student’s capacity to learn.
  • Plan, use professional judgment, and act effectively to carry out the functions of this position within the direction provided by RESA mission and goals and Educational Services goals and objectives.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work required.
  • Valid Michigan Masters Social Worker license required.
  • Michigan Department of Education Full Approval as a School Social Worker required.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of practical experience working as a school social worker required.
  • Demonstrated experience providing school social work and school health and safety-related consultation and leadership to local school districts and community agencies required.
  • Demonstration of recent work with school personnel in integrating current research-based school health and safety strategies into the school environment.
  • Demonstrated skill in effective problem-solving, decision-making, and verbal and written communication required.

Special Skills and Training

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in the fields of school social work and school health required.
  • Demonstrated consultation, training, group facilitation, and process skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining community partnerships required.
  • Demonstrated skill in proposal development and budget management preferred.
  • Proficiency in using the Microsoft Windows desktop operating system and Windows-based software.

Compensation:

WCSSF 12-Month Salary Schedule – Schedule H ($74,673 - $113,015 FY) and a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including health/dental/vision/life and long-term disability insurance. Generous time off including 19 paid holidays, sick and personal business days. Membership in the Michigan Public Schools Employee Retirement System www.michigan.gov/ors. The position is represented by the Wayne County Salaried Staff Federation Local 4479 (WCSSF).
