Role Summary
The Pearl River, R&D (Research and Development) Senior Associate, Risk Management provides EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) and Business Continuity expertise and oversight for the North American Global Workplace Solutions & Services (GWSS) R&D Region II Pearl River site, ensuring compliance with all applicable occupational safety regulatory requirements and GEHS (Global Environmental Health & Safety) Standards while developing strategies to manage identified business continuity risks. The Pearl River site is comprised of the R&D owned and leased facilities.
Key accountabilities of this position include the creation, implementation, maintenance, and auditing of EHS compliance-related policies and procedures, and administration of assigned programs in coordination with other functional areas. This position will work with senior site leadership, line management and functional area colleagues, to ensure policy and procedure maintenance and development, walkthrough inspections, audits, risk assessments, task evaluations, testing, training, briefings and reporting of performance measures/metrics are completed.
The position requires a “hands-on approach” to ensure organizational compliance of applicable federal, state and local regulatory requirements, and GEHS Standards. This position will evaluate, identify and ensure that each operation follows and adheres to proven and standardized EHS procedures, policies and rules by all assigned team members, visitors, customers and contractors entering the site’s facilities and property.

This role will be based at the Pearl River, NY Vaccines Research & Development campus.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Characterize the EHS risk profile for the Pearl River R&D site and establish plans to ensure effective management of identified risks
-
Maintain the EHS legal register for the operations in conjunction with other site-based Risk Management staff to ensure compliance requirements are effectively addressed. This includes:

Management of required EHS permits
-
Biological safety programs
-
Represent the sites during federal, state or local EHS agency authority inquiries or inspections.

Build and maintain EHS programs (in conjunction with other site-based Risk Management staff) in accordance with the operational risk profile including but not limited to:
-
Laboratory safety
-
Biosafety
-
Management of Change
-

Establishes and maintains systems to ensure effective risk management including:

Development and maintenance of self-review processes, e.g., internal EHS audits and inspections, tracking of identified actions to closure.

Maintenance of the EHS SharePoint sites and other relevant electronic and hardcopy records and regulatory documentation as applicable.

Establishes an effective network to enable delivery of effective risk management solutions:

Develops and maintains relationships with stakeholders including GEHS, RMS professionals within Pfizer ensuring alignment of programs and the leveraging of network resources.

Works closely with site leadership to ensure continuous improvement and compliance of RMS programs and initiatives.

Provides assistance to EHS Committee Chairs to enable effective development of critical documentation and tools to support risk assessments, safe work practices and adverse event/near miss reporting & investigation.

Select and manage consultants and/or contractors for specialized EHS related work

Determine budget considerations for RMS program requirements and manage expenditures accordingly

Maintain flexibility regarding any other duties which may be assigned as required.

Other related assignments as identified by GWSS management as deemed appropriate.

Communicates and interacts with the Site Leaders and other Senior Leadership at the sites.

Works with external vendors providing site operational services.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelor’s Degree in the biological sciences, bio-engineering or equivalent discipline
-
Active membership in at least one relevant professional body, ideally with a formal continuous professional development requirement.
-
Minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience as an EHS professional, preferably in pharma or biotech R&D setting with an emphasis on biosafety
-
Ability to prepare technical reports and evaluations
-
Demonstrated computer skills; MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

Possess excellent written, verbal and people skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Master’s Degree in Environmental Health and Safety preferred

Active member of the American Biological Safety Association
-
Experience in using and administrating enterprise data management systems preferred
-
Experience in EHS management systems creation and administration is a plus.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Due to the nature of work assignment, the incumbent must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraints. Daily, the position responsibilities may require the ability to stoop; to reach; to stand, to walk the site for extended periods of time; to push and/or pull objects weighing up to 30 pounds; to lift and carry objects weighing up to 15 pounds; to sit/stand at a computer workstation for extended periods of time. On a frequent basis, essential duties of the position may require the ability to climb stairs, to kneel and/or crouch to retrieve items.
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS

Day shift with occasional after hours or weekend response required.

Periodic travel may be required in support of GWSS business needs

Respond to the site in support of business continuity, emergency response and off-shift schedules periodically
-
Entry and work inside cGMP laboratories, high containment laboratories, pilot plants, aseptic manufacturing spaces, mechanical/electrical rooms, maintenance shops, shipping and receiving and service corridors. While working in these areas, strict adherence to aseptic gowning and procedures and personal protective equipment will be required as applicable.
