Sr. Clinical Social Worker

University Health Services (UHS) is a member of the Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) practice group, which supports wellness, primary care and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the university. In addition to the SHWB wellness office, our UHS-Mental Health Clinic provides in-person mental health care options at our clinic as well as remote support though phone/video resources.

University Health Services, the Johns Hopkins medical campus student health service, is seeking a licensed Senior Clinical Social Worker to serve in our University Health Services- Mental Health (UHS-MH) program.

As with all UHS-MH staff, this person will provide a full range of clinical services to all East Baltimore students and learners as part of the UHS clinical team. The clinical social worker will provide therapy, assessment, consultation, and crisis intervention to our population of graduate and professional students, house staff, post-doctoral fellows, trainees and their eligible spouses. The therapy provided will be brief with the exception of patients with psychiatric conditions who may benefit from long-term therapy.

The person in this position may be asked to provide some mental health services at other JHU locations in addition to UHS. This is a 1.0 FTE full-time exempt senior staff position which reports directly to the UHS-MH psychiatrist clinical director.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

• Utilizes brief psychotherapy methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or Interpersonal Therapy techniques, to treat patients collaboratively with the treating psychiatrist.
• Able to assist and manage clients in crisis.
• Maintains a caseload of clients which may be heavy and challenging at times. Flexes work hours to add additional slots as requested during times of high seasonal demand for services, such as during the fall or spring.
• Continues to see clients as long as medically indicated, as determined in collaboration with the treating psychiatrist and or director.
• Utilizes telemedicine, as appropriate, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Participates in an on-call back-up, after-hours, holidays and on weekends, with other mental health providers.
• Terminates therapy when clients are unlikely to benefit from continuing therapy.
• Transitions clients to community if there are more appropriate services.
• Sees clients as often as necessary to manage their acute crisis with a goal of getting them to their pre-crisis level of functioning.
• Continually assesses the needs of current clients with collaborating psychiatrist to determine therapy frequency, duration and scope.
• Documents all encounters with clients and maintains records in accordance with University and professional standards.
• Completes all required electronic documentation in Titanium Schedule and/or other electronic record used by the program.
• Consults with and/or facilitates timely and appropriate referrals to other professional staff, as well as to other Departments on- or off-campus, as appropriate.
• Participates in the development and maintenance of accurate and comprehensive referral files.
• Transitions clients needing continuing care to outside mental health professionals within 90 days of graduation when indicated.
• Conducts initial evaluations and phone triages as per the clinic’s triage schedule.
• Sees triaged clients who require further evaluation and therapy on their schedule within two weeks of the initial triage phone call.
• Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic and professional goals.
• Interfaces with other professionals when clinically appropriate for patient care.
• Seeks clinical supervision when appropriate.
• Attends required team meetings for collaboration with UHS-MH staff.
• Attends continuing professional education activities as required to maintain certification.
• Follows UHS policies and procedures as outlined in administrative meetings, internal documents, emails and memoranda and assists with the shaping and implementation of such policies as requested.
• Promptly reports all clinical issues that might affect our students and trainees to the UHS-MH Clinical Director and Clinical Program Manager, Nurse and other administrative staff as indicated.
• Participates in team meetings and care coordination.
• Follows UHS policy regarding coverage of clients when requesting leave or vacation.
• Other duties as assigned.

• PC, facsimile, photocopier, telephone, video conference.

Computer or other Special Requirements:

• Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in emails is required. Knowledge of Excel helpful.
• Will need to be trained in the use of the UHS-MH program’s electronic scheduling and medical records systems.
• Will need to have knowledge and/or be trained on video/telemedicine visits.

Degree of Independent Action Performed:

• Must possess the ability to function independently; clinical supervision to be provided by staff psychiatrist.

Internal & External Contacts Required:

• Interacts with students and trainees on the east Baltimore medical campus: medical students, nursing students, house staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and their families, as well as with faculty and staff of both the Hospital and University, and with community professionals. Facilitates triage and care of acute cases and emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

• Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work with two years clinical experience in the field of clinical social work required. LCSW-C license and certification in the State of Maryland required.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in delivering mental health services to diverse learner or adult populations.
• Proven ability to relate effectively to a wide variety of people of various ages and backgrounds including an understanding and appreciation of gender, cultural, ethnic, and international differences.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Three or more related years of work experience.
• Additional supervision and training post-licensure.
• Experience with college and/or graduate and professional students and young adult population.
• Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and/or dialectical behavioral techniques.
• Able to provide support and crisis intervention when needed.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Must possess skills in supportive therapy and problem-solving skills, differential diagnosis of complex mental health problems, judgment regarding when to seek supervision, experience with the phenomenology and treatment of major mental illness and suicide and/or violent or homicidal behaviors.
• Experience with mental health crisis.
• Some experience in assessing and/or treating individuals with personality disorders.
• Experience in workplace/student issues and substance abuse are helpful.
• Commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations.
• Commitment to one’s own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a professional.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $63,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
