Position Description

St. Albans School in Washington D.C. is seeking a Head Lower School Librarian starting September 1, 2023.

About St. Albans:

From the top of Mount St. Alban, St. Albans School looks up to the Washington National Cathedral and out to the United States Capitol. Our location serves as an embodiment and constant reminder of the School’s motto: Pro Ecclesia et Pro Patria, for Church and Country. The School was established in 1909 by the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation. Our mission is to prepare boys in grades 4 through 12 to develop and use their spiritual, intellectual, artistic, and physical gifts not for themselves alone, but in service of the greater community. Duties for Head Lower School Librarian include:

• Developing and maintaining the Parrott Library’s print and non-print collections to support the students, faculty, and curriculum

• Managing the library’s circulation, reading room, and budget

• Overseeing the library’s website and social media platforms

• Teaching library research classes across grades 4 through 8

• Co-teaching with subject area teachers on specific projects

• Helping design summer reading lists across grades

• Coordinating programming for guest speakers and book clubs

• Working with the Upper School librarian and the Educational Technology Coordinator to support learning in the Lower School

• Coordinating with librarians across the Close to manage library catalogs and applications

• Promoting the Parrott Library as an inviting, creative intellectual environment

Qualifications:

• MLS or experience working in a school library setting
• Background in primary and secondary school setting
• Awareness and interest in library and media science trends
• Ability to engage effectively with faculty and students across disciplines
• Above all, being a passionate reader of literature across a wide range of age levels and genres.

1)participation in a 403 (b) defined contribution plan provided through TIAA-CREF (school contributes 7% of eligible contribution and employee is required to make a pre-tax contribution of 5%). Eligibility begins with hiring and enrollment is required after 3 full years of service.

4)St. Albans pays 60% of the cost of the medical premiums offered through the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation of which St. Albans is a part. The employee pays the remaining 40%. Employees have access fo medical, dental and vision care insurance benefits.
