Purpose:
The Pharmacy Supervisor operates under the direction of the System Pharmacy Technician Manager with professional oversight from the System VP, Pharmacy. The position supervises the technical and human resource components of the pharmacy technicians and provides day-to-day support for all technician activities including the preparation, dispensing, charging, and delivery of medications to patients. In addition, this Supervisor plays an integral part with the overall daily operations of the Pharmacy including quality of sterile products. Patients served include Neonate through Adult-Geriatric.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates proficiency and expertise in performing the duties all pharmacy technician shifts at all sites.
  • Supervises the pharmacy technicians including, but not limited to, interviewing, hiring, training, performance reviews, competencies, and scheduling.o Assesses educational and training needs and develops programs to support development, competence, and proficiency of pharmacy technicians.o Promotes and managers the pharmacy technician ladder program in conjunction with the Pharmacy Technician Manager.o Assures training is completed in a reasonable timeframe with proper documentation necessary to comply with the regulatory requirements.
  • Responsible for daily operations of pharmacy technicians as follows:o Analyzes workflow data and adapts schedules and assignments to meet identified needs.o Makes assignments and delegates workload based on skill level of individuals.o Responds to schedule requests in a timely manner.
  • Communicates constantly with the pharmacist in charge and pharmacy leadership team.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and ability to use current equipment, including pneumatic tube, fax machines, printers, IV compounder, PN compounder, Pyxis machines, Carousel, unit-dosing software, high-speed packager, barcoding, medication reconciliation software, etc. Provides training and administers appropriate competencies for technician staff of all equipment and software programs.
  • Consistently communicates in a courteous and professional manner when interacting with customers and coworkers. Respects confidentiality and established boundaries when providing information.
  • Consistently displays teamwork by actively supporting departmental changes, assisting coworkers willingly and proactively assisting new employees. Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure.
  • Consistently demonstrates professionalism by displaying flexibility, positive attitude, respect for individuals and commitment to the organization, department, profession, and patient.
  • Ensures operations of the department are economically sound. Maintains awareness of financial issues that face the pharmacy department. Supports and encourages personnel to participate in cost reduction initiatives.
  • Assures completion of performance improvement and quality assurance activities including unit inspections, prepackaging logs, and IV room hood cleaning. Assures compliance with USP <797> and USP <800> standards. Reviews results of sterile technique testing and takes action if results are not acceptable.
  • Performs pharmacy unit inspections as needed. Assures all inspections are completed accurately as scheduled.
  • Assures the pharmacy is maintained in a clean, orderly and safe manner with regard to the restocking of shelves, cleaning of workstations, returning of medications to stock, etc.
  • Promotes Mission, Vision and Values of UPMC Pinnacle System.Performs related and additional duties as assigned.
  • Participates in special projects as required or assigned.Acts as departmental representative on assigned committees.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Some previous supervisor or leadership experience.
  • Minimum of five years health-system pharmacy experience.
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
  • Extensive knowledge and complete understanding of all facets of health-system pharmacy.
  • Currently enrolled in a Master's Degree in a healthcare related program preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

Clearances must be dated within 90 days

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT)
  • Act 34 with renewal
