Job description
ABOUT EQUIS
Equis is a set of organizations (including Equis Research, Equis Institute and EquisLabs) working to create a better understanding of Latinos, innovate new approaches to reach and engage them, and invest in the leadership and infrastructure for long-term change and increased engagement.
At Equis Research we lean into the complexities of Latino voters in the United States, ensuring they get the sophistication of treatment and level of attention that matches their critical role in the electorate. We act as a public utility, using a diversity of tools (polling, qualitative insights, digital testing, voter data and analytics, along with best practices from other sectors) to shape the decisions of the political and policy ecosystem. People who are invisible in the data are invisible to campaigns and decision-makers; we aim to make them visible, and shift from a paradigm of neglect to one of engagement. Some of our previous public analysis is available here (https://equisresearch.medium.com/) and here (https://assets.ctfassets.net/ms6ec8hcu35u/1mDsrEXAtUgRPkqWuwqfBW/392d4a13e0c18c8ba3f86cb885f8faa6/2022_Equis_Resources.pdf).
POSITION SUMMARY
Equis is seeking a Full-time Survey Scientist to design highly rigorous polls, oversee the integrity of the entire data collection process, and run experiments that add to the body of best practices for surveying Latino voters. The Survey Scientist will be part of the Research Department, on a team that supports the design, analysis and interpretation of a wide variety of research projects–including polling, focus groups, message testing, and field experiments. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams, and outside vendors, to ensure that surveys are statistically sound and optimally accurate throughout the data collection process, from sample design to final crosstabs. At Equis, our top priority is the wellbeing and power of the Latino community; our research aims to deepen our understanding of how to reach and engage Latinos in the political process. The ideal candidate for this position would be invested in the same desired outcomes and impact for our research.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as an internal expert on research design and methodology, and implement organization-wide best practices for surveys, including quotas, weighting, questionnaire design, and QC protocols.
- Creatively seek solutions to our methodological challenges, by designing and managing experiments to improve survey accuracy and questionnaire efficacy.
- Work closely with allied polling firms and panel providers to improve shared practices.
- Ensure the quality of our data through the collection process, from sample design to the accuracy and clarity of toplines and crosstabs.
- Stay up-to-date on latest trends and techniques in survey research, and network with others working through similar questions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree OR equivalent experience in social science or quantitative fields (e.g., political science, survey methodology, sociology, psychology, economics, marketing, statistics, or similar programs)
- Meaningful experience with the process of survey research from beginning to end, including questionnaire design, sampling approaches and quotas, and/or survey research outputs (e.g., raw data, topline reports, cross-tabulation tools, etc.)
- Experience working with survey applications (e.g., Qualtrics, Google Consumer Surveys, etc.), statistical software (e.g., Stata or R) and/or SQL
- Familiarity with the major challenges of modern-day polling (e.g. differential partisan non-response) and some of the proposed adjustments
- A history of managing your own workload, and demonstrated comfort with a fast-paced environment, where a quick turnaround on survey results, for example, is often critical.
- Excellent communication skills, with an ability to adapt and explain methodologies to various audiences.
- A demonstrated, almost maniacal attention to detail
- An understanding of how racial/ethnic bias can influence scientific research, including data collection and analysis
- Commitment to the core Equis goal of enhancing the wellbeing and power of the Latino community
- Most of all you should be excited by the challenge of cracking hard problems in Latino polling, profoundly curious, and aligned with our team mandate to 'innovate and improve ceaselessly.'
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience specifically with surveying hard-to-reach populations, and, ideally, Latino communities or Spanish speakers
- Experience conducting research across modes (live dial, both probability and non-probability web)
- Experience with pulling and manipulating voter file and/or census data
- Familiarity with the workings of political campaigns and/or advocacy groups
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- The ability to communicate with colleagues, partners, and clients via phone, video call, and email
- A high tolerance for virtual meeting.
