Swahili/English - Data Collection, Processing & Transcription Assistant
Job description
- Listen to conversations of youth in an afterschool club. Edit transcripts of student conversations recorded in various instructional contexts to refine them by adding details from videos or using close listening techniques.
- Translate and transcribe conversations from Swahili into English.
- Code qualitative data (images, audio recordings, transcripts, videos) using a code book developed by the research team.
- Write short summaries of your coding.
- Assist in data collection for 4-8 weeks in March-April. This requires travel to Salt Lake City on one Tuesday or Thursday per week to attend sessions that run 3:30-7:00pm (note, you must be in SLC by 3:30!). Travel cost is reimbursed for students who use their own vehicle, or a university vehicle can be arranged, and, travel time counts as paid hours.
- Advanced speaker of Swahili.
- Comfortable using Microsoft Word and proficiency in typing
- Must be detail-oriented
- Curiosity about equity in STEM education and/or qualitative research methods
- Ability to complete CITI training through the IRB*
- This is free, fast, easy, and available online. It’s basic ethics training for people who work on research with “human subjects” – Dr. Braden will guide you through the process!
