About AFSP:
Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education, and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death. Headquartered in New York, and with a public policy office in Washington, D.C., AFSP has local chapters in all fifty states with programs and events nationwide. AFSP employs 160 people across the United States and has an operational budget of $45 million.

AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that is smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

  • Funding scientific research
  • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
  • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
  • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to provide strategic and programmatic leadership to build and scale DEI initiatives and programs at the national and chapter levels and to serve as a key advisor to executives, senior managers, colleagues, and volunteers, to develop and integrate diversity best practices.

This newly created position will report to the Chief People, Culture, and Diversity Officer, and will work collaboratively across teams to foster an inclusive organization, in alignment with the mission and values of AFSP, by recommending, developing, implementing, managing, and assessing, both internal and external diversity related strategies, partnerships, programs, and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in Diversity & Inclusion, with knowledge of HR, Talent Management and Learning & Development principles and have a proven record for developing and implementing DEI strategies for a national organization. This person must possess the ability to build relationships, manage stakeholder expectations, and influence change with staff, volunteers, and community partners.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the DEI subject matter expert, by contributing perspective, insights, and knowledge
  • Develop and implement AFSP DEI strategic plan, including establishment of annual goals
  • Help foster a company culture of inclusion that advances DEI through policies, practices, and partnerships
  • Lead continuous review and evolution of internal policies and practices to support DEI in areas including advancement, chapter support, inclusion, and engagement of employees, staff, and volunteers
  • Conducts organization needs assessments to identify individual, team and organizational development opportunities
  • Provide guidance, direction, advocacy, and support for AFSP employee-led DEI working groups, and employee resource groups
  • Advise on internal and external communications to embed diverse, inclusive, equitable, content and messaging reflective of AFSP’s mission and purpose
  • Collect, track, and analyze data to measure and report progress against agreed indicators and evaluate the impact of organizational DEI policies and initiatives
  • Design, coordinate, and facilitate development training related to DEI for employees, staff, and volunteers

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to build inclusive communities and a thorough understanding of DEI concepts, best practices, and resources, change management frameworks, and behavioral competencies.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in relevant fields of HR Management, Organizational Development, Psychology preferred
  • 8+ years of experience in either Diversity and Inclusion, HR, Talent Management, Learning and Development or related disciplines
  • 5+ years of experience leading DEI Initiatives, DE&I certification helpful but not required
  • Proven ability to develop operational processes that drive greater efficiency and impact
  • Experience leading and supporting Employee Resource Groups
  • Sound judgement, decision making and high ethical standards
  • Experience leveraging data and analytics to develop insights and drive decision-making, translating to develop insights, telling stories, and measuring impact.
  • Adept in building relationships with partners and diverse communities and proven track record of facilitating organization wide initiatives with multiple internal and external stakeholders
  • Awareness of current events, understanding of their impact on the workplace and ability to translate external and internal trends into innovative practices
  • Enhance employee engagement initiatives and deliver and/or secure learning and development training opportunities
  • Effective interpersonal, presentation, verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively engage, impact and influence diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to work collaboratively, establish credibility, resolve conflicts, and build consensus across the organization
  • Prior experience working for a non-profit or health organization is helpful but not required
