**This position is currently located within the Department of Public Safety but will transfer to the Department of Adult Correction when it is established on January 1st, 2023.**

This position reports to the Mailroom Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility and will process, review, and distribute all outgoing mail, packages, legal, certified, and courier mail. Other responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintaining security of the facility by searching/reviewing all incoming/outgoing mail for unauthorized items/contraband, and correspondence deemed a threat to the safety, security, and orderly function of the facility.
• Making daily deliveries to and pickup from local post office.
• Processing over 850 pieces of mail and interoffice correspondence daily.
• Entering money orders, cashier/certified checks received for offenders into offender bank accounts along with cashier/certified checks received for offender into offender banking system.
• Having one-on-one contact with offenders.
• Requiring lifting of mail bags and packages up to 50 pounds.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC02 (Salary Range: $31,200 - $46,734). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:
Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks.

Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.
