Job description

General Summary:

The Baker coordinates with the dietary manager and the cook all the baking needs for the daily and weekly menus. Also, the Baker keeps the baking room organized and clean.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• To gather necessary ingredients and utensils needed for each baking project.
• To check with the department head for meal menu to coordinate a proper dessert.
• To use necessary baking books to determine ingredients and proper quantities to be used, etc.
• To be sure that ingredients regularly used are placed on an order list before items run out.
• To wash, clean and store utensils used in the baking process.
• To report needs to the department head as they develop.
• To help in the kitchen with the infirmary trays.
• To help at mealtime with serving the sister’s in the dining room.
• To fill in as needed in any area to make the team function well.
• To take part in fire drills and perform necessary functions as directed.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

• High school graduate or its equivalent.
• Ability to read and understand recipes.
• Ability to change measurements in recipes to larger specified quantities.
• To have worked elsewhere in the baking department.
• To have worked at home as a baker and used cookbooks, ovens, and other necessary utensils.
• To be physically capable of handling utensils, pots, and pans of an institutional size.
• To be able to withstand working in warm temperatures in the oven areas and to stand for long periods.
• To show evidence of good health and cleanliness.
• To be physically capable of bending, lifting, and using cooking utensils.
• Must be able to work as part of a team and independently.
• Willing to accept constructive criticism.
• Able to seek help as needed.
• Willing to learn, listen and communicate.

Working Conditions

• Busy environment, multiple interruptions, considerable walking, well equipped, bright work areas.
