Deputy Chief of Training

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Chief of Department ensure that personnel are trained and competent to execute all responsibilities effectively, efficiently, and safely with the departments standard operating guidelines and mission statement.

The position serves as “second in command” of the fire department operations/administration and has the rank of Deputy Fire Chief. The primary focus of this position will be training, with the Fire Chief managing day to day fire department activities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Administer department policies and procedures for the management of instructional resources, staff, facilities, records, and reports.
  • Develop a master plan for training and implement an annual schedule throughout the calendar year.
  • Approves and coordinates training activities with Shift Captains; advises the Fire Chief of training effectiveness.
  • Develop recommendations for policies to support the training program, so that the training and department goals are achieved.
  • Works closely with the EMS coordinator to maintain certifications and licenses for CPR and EMT.
  • Reviews training classes in Emergency Reporting for completeness and accuracy.
  • Responsible for overseeing and maintaining yearly ISO training hours for personnel.
  • Responsible for overseeing new recruits throughout recruit school wherever assigned.
  • Fill out purchase requisitions for training equipment and related class costs.
  • Write training equipment purchasing specifications that support the training program goals.
  • Identify instructional needs by conducting a periodic department analysis.
  • Prepares tentative annual training budget for the training division and maintains that budget throughout the year.
  • Works closely with our State Regional Training Coordinator and surrounding Training Chiefs to schedule classes and training.
  • Review cost worksheets from the Alabama Fire college to submit to the Fire Chief for approval.
  • Instruct Alabama Fire College classes throughout the year assisted by co-instructors within the department and surrounding agencies.
  • Supervise other instructors and participants during training to meet applicable safety standards and practices to meet instructional goals.
  • Responds to calls when necessary to assist in operations or command.
  • Assume Incident Management functions and positions as directed during an emergency incident upon activation of the Emergency Communications Center. Assume the Incident Commander position if necessary.
  • Attend classes, conferences, and seminars on fire prevention, investigation, public education, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, and suppression to maintain a continuing level of professional and technical competency.
  • Attend public education events to teach/ assist with classes and activities.
  • When directed assumes the role of Fire Chief.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with an associate degree.
  • Experience, education, and training usually associated with seven to ten years’ experience as a Fire Officer.
