Job description
The Health Advocate helps patients advocate for their care while hospitalized at UCSF Health and works closely with patients, clinical social workers, case managers, nurses, physicians, and other care teams to elevate the patient’s voice in the inpatient care.
Sees patients in-person and virtually, helps them navigate the complexities of the health system, communicates their needs and care goals, help provides support during difficult medical decisions, and helps with appointments and discharge teaching. Follows-up post-hospitalization to mitigate preventable post-hospitalization problems.
Collaborates with clinical team members and the patient and helps provide cultural insight to help inform of care and will have a defined role on the care team but will also act as a representative of the patient.
Department Description

The Division consists of the Patient Experience Improvement, Analytics, and Engagement Strategies department which oversees UCSF Health’s patient experience improvement efforts, patient experience data analytics, and patient communications. The division also includes the following operational departments: Patient Relations, Decedent Affairs, Spiritual Care Services, Pastoral Education, Interpreter and Language Services, Volunteer Services, and Guest Screening Services.
The division consistently applies Lean principles and innovative collaborative approaches and partnerships in order to identify and implement high-quality, effective, and sustainable strategies to improve the patient, staff, and provider experience.
Required Qualifications
- Trauma Informed Care training; if not, will obtain after hire
- Experience working with patients and families
- Experience working with populations of diverse ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation
- Experience working in community-based research or experience in community-based activities (e.g., community organizing, non-profit organizations, community-based organizations)
- Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
- Proficiency in organizational and administrative skills
- Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with colleagues as a member of the treatment team
- Ability to interface with and work well in a culturally sensitive manner with diverse communities in the context of community-based research
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in second language: Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin for potential work with patients with limited English proficiency
