Mammography Technologist - Breast Evaluation Center

General Definition and Scope of Job

Performs professional duties related to a variety of radiographic technical procedures using ionizing radiation for radiological diagnosis and therapy. Has the latitude for independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative to complete the requested procedure within the scope of his/her license. Assists in mentoring student technologists in their clinical rotation of Trinity Health – Grand Haven.

JOB STATUS:

• Part Time, 16 hours per pay period
• Casual, as needed

What are the Minimum Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements?

• A High School graduate or equivalent and a graduate of an approved school of Radiographic Technology.
• Must have current registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography, RT(R), and must have current registration in Mammography, RT(M), without restriction. Must be certified in both Radiography & Mammography.
• Must be able to read, write and speak the English language sufficiently to communicate accurate and tactful explanations to people who may be under some stress and to maintain all necessary record keeping.
• Must have the ability to successfully complete general orientation and the clinical skills guides of a Radiologic Technologist and Mammography Technologist.
• Must have current BLS certification.

What are the essential duties and responsibilities?

Mammography Tech:

• May support staffing management tasks and materials acquisition within the modality.
• Maintains established departmental policies, procedures and objectives related to quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
• Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with patients, physicians, guests and other members of the Health Care Team.
• Demonstrates the willingness to accept responsibility and the motivation and initiative to carry out the tasks and assignments delegated to him/her within one’s scope of practice.
• Performs mammographic examinations.
• Has the knowledge of and utilizes the appropriate patient care protocols for the age, development and psychological needs of all age groups.
• Positions the patient carefully and accurately to obtain the requested examination; adapts positioning due to variations such as trauma, patient age, patient body habitus, suspected or known pathology, etc. to produce diagnostic images according to developed protocols and accepted medical practice. Applies supportive and/or immobilization devices to obtain the requested examination as necessary.
• Selects the correct technical factor combinations (mA, kVp, mAS, phototimer, film/screen) to produce high quality images; adapts technical factors for unusual variations of the patient or other factors (pathology, etc.).
• Provides the appropriate radiation shielding and collimation to adhere to ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principles. Provides for the radiation safety of all persons in the area where radiation is employed.
• Performs office/clerical duties in the absence of clerical support staff.
• Secures all necessary supplies to maintain a prudent inventory level for patient care.
• Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, workshops, current literature and in service meetings. Obtains the necessary continuing education credits to maintain current licensure.
• Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
• Highly motivated individual willing to pursue lead mammography position.
• Responsible for ACR compliance and accreditation.
• Responsible for MQSA/FDA compliance and information required for inspections.
• Must have a full understanding and willing to learn State and Federal regulations regarding mammography and communicate with physicist.
• Ability to monitor BIRADS, call backs, and follow-ups.
• Must be able to perform Quality Assurance and perform statistics for radiologists and department.
• Provide quality diagnostic imaging and procedures and communicate with the physician and patient.
• Willing to consider pursuing breast ultrasound certification and stereotactic breast biopsies.

What are the Critical Demands of the Job?

• Must be able to handle multiple demands and make decisions about priorities.
• Must have the ability to assist in the transfer of patients from wheelchair or stretcher to the Radiography equipment.
• Must be able to stand at length as needed to perform the requested examination.

What are the Working Conditions?

• Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
• Frequent exposure to limited amounts of ionizing radiation.
• Works with a variety of complex electronic equipment, fixed and mobile diagnostic radiographic equipment, and automatic film processing equipment.
• Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients for Radiography procedures. Lifts supplies and small equipment associated with the above.

• Must be able to tolerate wearing protective gear (including, but not limited to, barrier gloves, moisture impervious lab coats, protective eye wear and face shields.
