The purpose of the job is to assist in meeting the physical, social-emotional and developmental needs of students in order to promote effective learning and successful academic achievement. Employees in this job classification are responsible for working with students, teachers, administrative faculty and parents to ensure the comprehensive needs of each student is met. Work includes collaborating with Student Intervention Teams to develop educational plans for students requiring special attention. Incumbents perform essential functions as outlined herein according to the specific needs of each student. Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Job Functions

- Conducts assessments on students exhibiting abnormal behavior; assists in the development and implementation of intervention programs for students with special needs.
- Receives and processes referrals on students from parents, school personnel and community agencies.
- Works with triage data and follows up accordingly with students, parents, building administration and central office administration.
- Works with referred students to help gain an understanding of physical and psychosocial problems; assists in the development of solutions to these problems.
- Confers with parents at home or at school to gain a mutual understanding of their children's behavioral problems and involve them in the plans for improvement of these behaviors.
- Refers parents and their children to appropriate community agencies and provides feedback to the schools; prepares written evaluations so they can be efficiently processed.
- Collaborates with community agencies to effectively meet the needs of students and/or their families; serves on FAPT Team; conducts CANS assessment.
- Makes home visits as needed to collect pertinent background information regarding students' needs, and to assist families presenting truancy problems.
- Provides casework and referral services to students and their families who are experiencing problems affecting school adjustment and progress; serves as a liaison between school personnel, parents and community agencies.
- Collaborates with school staff, student families and students in crisis, grief and loss situations; assists in the development and implementation of family support groups and workshops.
- Reports parents/guardians to court services and social services for abuse and neglect of their children.
- Reports summary of visits monthly to direct supervisor and Superintendent.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Ability to understand, follow and instruct written and oral instructions.
Skill in effectively collaborating with a staff comprised of teachers and professionals, engaged in assisting students at various academic levels, to facilitate successful academic achievement.
Skill in analyzing, identifying, addressing and implementing programs and activities for successfully resolving a multitude of child sociological problems.
Considerable knowledge of available resources and procedures to access resources, in order to meet the special needs of students and/or their families.
Considerable knowledge regarding legal responsibilities of social work; stays abreast of innovative professional practices in the field; stays abreast of program placement requirements for exceptional programs.
Knowledge of business English and spelling; knowledge of basic math.
Skill in clearly communicating information both verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
Ability to perform routine typing and basic computer operations, i.e., data entry, word processing and records retrieval.
Ability to access, operate and maintain various software applications; ability to read, update and maintain various records and files.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with departmental personnel, instructors, students and their families.
Ability to work independently to carry out assignments to completion.
Ability to perform duties with a professional and cooperative work ethic; ability to maintain confidentiality; ability to work flexible hours necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
Knowledge of basic school district work policies and guidelines; knowledge of departmental practices and procedures.
Education / Certifications / Experience
Master's Degree in School Social Work, or related field; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years responsible experience in social work, preferably within a similar educational institution; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess and maintain appropriate educational/social work certifications.
