Organization Overview
At the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula (BGCP), our business is changing lives. We are a vibrant, entrepreneurial, nonprofit organization in the heart of Silicon Valley that is committed to empowering the youth in our community with equitable access to social, academic, and career opportunities to thrive. We partner with schools and the community to ensure students from low-income neighborhoods graduate from high school, are ready for college and a career so they can lead fulfilling lives fueled by their passions, talents, and a love of learning.
We have grown steadily over the past 20 years to become the largest expanded learning time organization in San Mateo County, sites in East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Redwood City, South San Francisco, Daly City, and San Mateo. Our 24 program locations serve nearly 3,500 students countywide and are made possible with a $28 million organizational budget and through the talents of a 300-employee-strong workforce that keeps growing.
Position Overview
Our high school program across clubs is in transition. Recently, we’ve tweaked our program design after realizing that too many of the teens that come to the club are failing their classes, yet don’t meaningfully engage once they are with us. We started asking questions about our role in their lives and the desired impact that we hoped to drive. Were we doing enough? Stakes are high in Silicon Valley, and the majority of our clubhouse teens are ill-prepared to compete once they graduate from high school. Did we have the right sense of urgency?
Ultimately, we doubled down on our commitment to being way more than a “hang-out” spot for our teens. Now, we know exactly who is most struggling academically and they are assigned to an “adult anchor” in the club with whom they meet regularly to discuss what’s impeding their academic success and how they plan to overcome their challenge areas. Case management is the cornerstone of our approach. Our teens need caring adult mentors who lovingly push them to identify what “sparks” them, but also to hold them to a high standard of personal accountability.
A typical day in this role at BGCP might include checking-in with your caseload, supporting teens with homework, communicating with their tutors, leading life skills or college workshops, and helping us to build a positive peer culture that is future-focused and achievement-oriented. There is a lot of work to be done, but our next Summer High School Program Leader will have the opportunity to work with colleagues to strengthen our high school programming at BGCP’s Redwood City Clubhouse.
